Morgan Dollar collectors...

Regardless if it is a common, better date or key...is there a particular date that you just can't seem to find a "nice" example? Whether it is due to poor strike, less than exciting luster or just does not have the eye appeal? I normally hear 1891-O because of all of it's issues.. and I agree to a certain extent, but what other dates frustrate you as a collector?

One of the toughest and most frustrating dates to find the way I like them (blast white, with flashy and fresh lustre) was the 1904-P.

The 1880-CC (R79) was also annoyingly hard to find with a well struck ear on Liberty. The R78 version, however, seems to regularly come well struck.
    When in doubt, don't.

Hard to pick one. 1891-O is a darn good choice though. The periphery of the obverse in the strikes are usually flat, barely bringing up the stars. 1892-O is also notorious as a pancake in the centers. One many don't think of is 1901-S. There are indeed some nice strikes for the dates, but there are some of the worst in the series. Among my DMPLs, the 1901-S is the only one where I am not happy with the strike and planchet. But it is so damned rare to care that much. (There was a PCGS 66DMPL last in the Hoffnagle sale that was a huge exception.) Got another 1901-S prooflike (ANACS 61PL, VAM-11 Discovery coin). 1884-S is another one that most people know just doesn't come nice very often.

If I was to choose one as the coin I couldn't find nice enough for my own particular set, it would be the 1884-S. I have a 60PL in my set. I have seen others graded slightly higher that I couldn't see any real advancement in quality from my current piece, some looked AU to me too. There is a single one that is tagged as a DMPL that is not a DMPL IMO. Even outside of the prooflikes, this is just a plain lousy date to find a nice example for. It is the one date I think AU58 might be the best place to be. There is one spectacular coin for the 1884-S date, but we cannot all own it.

I was trying to upgrade a 21-d this weekend and they looke flat. I agree with the prioir comment on the 1892-o. I looked at mine yesterday and though it is a 63 (I think) the breast looked like roller line and I swear there was no ear.

On the flipside I love the strike of the 79-s and the crispness of several of the CC's.

The 92-o is one. The 02-s and 94-s in ms can be harder to find without roller marks as well. You have to remember too that many of the nicest examples of these tough to find nice dates are already squirreled away in smoeone's collection, making the tough find even tougher.

  • Good examples or poor/tougher examples given...thanks....I also think many of the common Philadelphia coins are somewhat blah looking..either due to strike or luster...(probably because the huge amounts that were struck.)

I've heard that the 95-P's take a little digging.

I like them all... nice examples are good... but it is the coin that counts. At least to a collector..... Cheers, RickO

Yeah....I would guess a partially melted 95-P would not have very good eye appeal! imageimage

    *chuckle*

It's funny, but despite 81-S's being as common as dirt, I still go after them because they have such sparkle compared to other dates (some of the 79-S and 80-S can be lovely as well). I've seen 81-S's in 63 and 64 that have such incredible PL sparkle that even 66s and 67s of other dates cannot approach the same aesthetic appeal. A nice 81-S rainbow toner is a beauty to behold, not from any level of scarcity, but just as pure eye candy.

1890-O, 1901, 1921-S come to mind. Also, try to find a nice 1889 with sharp details all the way to the edge of the coin. It's not a rare coin nice by any stretch of the imagination, but it's one of those dates where coins struck from heavily worn dies are common, and someone looking for a sharp one will be casting aside plenty of "not good enough" coins in the process.
