I thought he had till last night to make up his mind?
On a side-note: Congrats to Ortiz for his Silver Slugger, Youk for his Gold Glove, and to Pedroia for the AL ROY.

<< <i>And I think he has till midninght tonight, yes? >>
I heard that on the radio this morning..
<< <i>the only thing that midnight tonight marks is a team's exclusivity rights insofar as negotiations are concerned with their prospective free agents >>
Right... so basically he's got till tonight at midnight to make a deal or look elsewhere.....
<< <i>Free agents can only negotiate with their current teams - come midnight tonight, they have the opportunity to negotiate on the open market with all teams becomes available. And yes, I hope Lowell is signed by the Red Sox sometime within the next 10 hours. No sense in even letting other teams get their foot in the door and make him offers. >>
Good call! I'll take him back too! Honestly, I thought the Red Sox were going to say 2 years or nothing....
We'll see.
Michael Silverman has a little detail on Boston's three-year offer to Mike Lowell: it's between $12-15MM per season. It's all guaranteed, and it doesn't seem to be a "take it or leave it" offer, but they won't add a fourth year. So it's for $45MM on the high end. If you agree with Jon Heyman's 4/52 prediction, Lowell would be leaving a minimum of $7MM on the table.
Silverman adds that the Red Sox won't go nuts trying to replace Lowell with a big name if things don't work out. They figure that if Kevin Youkilis can win a Gold Glove at first, he might be adequate at third base. They peeked their head in on Miguel Cabrera and balked at the price of Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz. Joe Crede might be someone for the Sox to consider.
The Yankees, Angels, and Phillies will be in on Lowell if he can't come to an agreement with Boston. However, Phils GM Pat Gillick has stated his focus is pitching rather than third base.
<< <i>Come on guys, don't you want Arod? Can't you picture him getting hit after hit after hit off of the green monster? It's home sweet home for him!! >>
How bout no....

I prefer that the Sox play more than three games each October.

Yep, the Boston fans know an overrated playr when they see one. There was a good article the other day on Arod's 0 for 27 with runners on in the playoffs. Everything I've been yapping about here.
<< <i>Honestly guys, I'm not a Sox fan but as I've said before, Lowell will be an albatross around the neck of the Red Sox if they give him 12-15 per, that's just crazy for a guy who's had one good year in the last 4. This guy has been declining steadily besides his free agent year (suprise, surprise). I realize he has a great number of intangibles and he's terrific defensively, but he's not going to light it up like last year next year, or at least the year after that. The Sox knew what they were doing with Damon--they knew he was a washed-up has-been by the time his ticket came up and they passed. For some reason now though, they aren't taking the same approach with Lowell. Just don't agree with this one, take the pass Sox, take the pass, let someone else waste their money.

I believe the key difference between the two players and their respective potential is injury history. Damon had been constantly banged up over his years with the Red Sox whereas Lowell has not been. I think that's why the Sox may be willing to sign Lowell for three years. It is entirely possible too that the Sox are just making gestures to sign Lowell, thinking what you have said. I do believe they do intend to sign him for three years, however.
<< <i>Lowell posted great numbers at home, at Fenway. He would be foolish to go elsewhere. any team that gives him 4 years is just silly. 3 years, 39 million for a good leader, veteran, superb glove and solid hitter in a city that loves him and teammates that adore him. seems like a no brainer, but lets see if greed and short-sightedness comes into play. >>
I Agree 100%, Well put!
<< <i>Come on guys, don't you want Arod? Can't you picture him getting hit after hit after hit off of the green monster? It's home sweet home for him!! >>
NO!!!!!!!!!
1 mill if you are over your career BA
1 mill if you get All Star starting
1 mill if you get MVP
PLus his 3 year 36 mill. Guy had a BANNER year last year!
Come on Lowell.... we want you back!!!!
Rodriguez would be a great addition. I don't know enough about the teams economics to know if it would be a good move or not for the entire team
Which means, it's almost guaranteed that he's going elsewhere.
I guess we'll have to take A-Rod.
This sucks.
<< <i>Well, the midnight deadline has come and gone...

don't count on it...I think Lowell is going to stay in Boston.
If Lowell has any brains he stays with the Sox.
<< <i>Between Varitek, Martinez, Damon and Schilling the Red Sox have a very good track record of deciding what to do with their high priced over-30 players. I would really like to see Lowell on the Red Sox through the end of the decade, but if the cost is over $40 million I'll trust their judgement

Did you take into consideration that ARod is over 30?
<< <i>I heard on ESPN that the Yankees have offered Mike Lowell 4 years >>
And they want him for 1st Base. I dont see it happening. I think this is something to make the Red Sox dig deeper into their pockets. Yanks are already flush with 1B, unless they are working on trading Shelly Duncan AND Andy Phillips.
Mariano and Lowell should just sign with their respective teams. both offers are very good.
"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."
