It was set up as a regular auction (bid to the death) and someone emailed him and asked him to do a buy it now for $25 and gave him some sappy story for doing a buy it now and he fell for it.

No doubt. I emailed the seller and told him what the possible estimated values of the coin would be in certain grades but I haven't heard from him. He knows he screwed up but what can you do.

Ooopppsss....lost in the mail
Seriously though, yes, he lost out on more money but he likely still made money. What the buyer did wasn't exactly playing with his cards shown nor fair to everyone, but enough people around here do the same thing, and talk about it, that I just take it at face value.
<< <i>No doubt. I emailed the seller and told him what the possible estimated values of the coin would be in certain grades but I haven't heard from him. He knows he screwed up but what can you do. >>
You could have done the same thing. I think most serious hunters here have done the same things. It was a sale between 2 parties, I don't think I would get involved in trying to screw that up. There are plenty to go around and another will come up sooner than later.
What am I missing here? I have one and the other 2, I only paid 11 bucks for mine and got free shipping. If I am missing something I'm going to buy another as it is advertised right now for 11 clams.

Been there, done that. This MS67CAM came out of a set from a local dealer. The set cost me $11. I think I will probably turn a profit when I sell it. I did not tell him what I thought he had, but he should have known that already. If the seller was mislead by the buyer in the instant case, then that is a different story:
You can never tell how great, average or bad an SMS half is from a picture. You have to see it in hand after it has been removed from the OGP.
That said, the pictured half does show promise, particularly the appearance of clean, mirrored fields. The frost on the obverse and reverse devices does not, at first glance, look that great.
It would be helpful if the buyer of the coin cut it out of the cello, took a high quality picture of both side under good lighting conditions and then posted a picture here on the forums so we could comment on the coin (we deserve all of the vicarious gratification we can get, right). Hope he got a good one.

If it is a cameo half then go for it.
Here is one I bought off eBay earlier. The reverse frost is as heavy as the obverse. By the way, these aren't proof coins but have many of the same qualities. They are very few and far between.

Yea, I could have done the same thing but I don't like to interfere with auctions like that. Now if it had been a buy it now or make an offer auction to start with then I would have pulled the trigger instantly. I'm not about to get involved after a sale has been finalized. I approached the seller after the sale to let him know he did indeed screw up by believing a crappy story the buyer gave him to end the auction with a buy it now to only him.
I can't change anything about what happened. The amount of recycled crap on eBay gets old after awhile and to see a nice set like that one come through only to end the way it did is frustrating.

Let me cheer you up. I once spotted a 1966 set that looked like it had a full blown deep cameo half in it. I eMailed the seller and asked him to add a BIN so I could buy it. He did - after I went home for the evening. Came in the next morning, and somebody else had snatched it. Now, THAT is frustration.

<< <i>What is the estimated value on that? >>
It all depends on how it grades but that is one nice looking Kennedy that has a lot of potential.
Thats one way to outfox snipers

Look closely at the half in the set....light hazing but D@MN nice mirrors!!!!!
Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
<< <i>how many of those mint sets did they produce? >>
Millions, so they're common and worthless.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
obviously the coin is better then most but the first thing
that came to my mind was not monster mirrors...
but i am sure your eyes can tell from all the different photo
techniques? bad pics/bad angle/reflection/etc..
here is a coin i dug up on the search page that makes me think
monster mirrors. the coin in the auction has this same potential??

But you'll email the seller after the fact with your unsolicited opinions?

What I did happened after the auction ended. I wasn't trying to change anything.
And your point is?
Mind your own business is something that comes to my mind.
Anything else you want to cover?
