So, have you ever had a binge coin buying spree?

Maybe you were bored at a show and just wanted a change in scenary in your collection.

Maybe you just happened to be in the right place at the right time and filled a lot of holes in your collection.

Explain any of your binge buys. I don't care if it's 1,000,000 wheat cents or 5 tough coins for your 7070. Let's hear what you picked up for the old collection.

I remember about 3 years ago being in San Antonio and there was a coin shop that had bulk Barber dimes, quarters and halves. This was a time where I was just getting into the Barber series and I just wanted to get a complete collection in any grade. So, after a couple of hours searching in this small shop, I left with about 1/2 a collection of Barber Quarters, 1/3 of the Barber Halves, and 1/4 of the Barber Dimes. It was also amazing to see how cheap I could pick these up for; 90c for the dimes, $2 for the quarters, and $4-6.50 for the halves. Oh, and some of the dates were semi-keys image. None of the coins passed VG grades and most were AG/G's, but hey it was a lot of fun. image

  • Yeah, if it's the shop out on 281N, that's by my old place. I was just in that shop a couple of days ago, but passed on coins this trip. I may be moving back into that house for a while to liquidate its contents. ESTATE SALE!

P.S. I saw that tub of Barbers. It's impressive, isn't it?!

I was building a set of commemoratives - one from each state I have lived in - eleven - and at one show I picked up five.... strained the wallet, but I left smiling. Cheers, RickO

I bought a boat load of raw silver coins over the course of several weeks last spring anticipating a long term move up in Silver prices. It turned out to be too much of a hassle recording and sorting it all out that since that time, I quit buying raw silver coins and purchased a hunk of SLV on the nyse. It's much easier to play the silver move that way for me.

I bought ten upgrades for my Kennedy set at one time. That killed the budget for about three months. Luckly the dealer let me spead the payments out over a few months.

I have gone on a few buying binges, but they were rare cases where coins I wanted and knew the value of, were offered all at once. I think I spent more than $5,000 buying the large portion of a complete Mid-grade Barber half set. Every date was available, many duplicates in the key and semi-key dates also.

The craziest part of this binge were the prices. The coins were mostly undergraded and priced half of the going Ebay rates. These coins were bought from a well known dealer. I ended up buying probably 30 XF original Barber halves for low VF prices.

I ended up keeping about 23 coins for my set, and bought another 10-15 for resale. The coins I resold almost made up for the complete cost of all the coins purchased. Coin collecting has been boring for me ever since that one windfall. That and it helped me complete my Barber set.

  • Biggest binge was 20 graded Kennedys when I had just started my collection from a board member here ( 7 are still with it ). I willing to have anouther if I could find some upgrades for my Kennedy setimage

I dropped about $2K on some raw MS Lincolns at the ANA show in NYC a few years back. (Yeah, I know, 2K isn't much of a binge for some of you folks but for me it was!)

Still have most of them. about half I bought from a seller who has been criticized on these boards in the past for selling dipped/cleaned stuff, but what I bought was absolutely original and problem free so I'm happy.

I have not purchased a coin for my personal collection in a long time. In the past two weeks, I picked up a 1909 S VDB, 1909 VDB, and 2004 Lewis and Clark MS70. I would call that a binge for me and my wife quickly put the breaks on that image after I got my first coin in the mail. I guess she wants something nice for Christmas and our Anniversary.

  • I dropped $1,000 in the course of several hours at the March ANA show in Charlotte this year. Granted, one of the coins was a MS63 Saint that I got for $750, but still image

I have been searching for PCGS AU58 $2 1/2,$5,$10 gold Indians for a while. About a month ago a dealer I work with emailed me to tell me he had all three from the same seller! I was never planning on buying all three at once but I did. Good thing I had some $$ from some sales here or I never would have been able to afford them all.

I was at FUN about three years ago and dropped around $1300 on half raw and half non PCGS Lincoln's. I do not own a single one now, all graded lower, were cleaned..You know the story.

  • I walked into a show before with the intention of selling, not buying. Well I sold off about 5K in coins, and before I left the show, spent all the money. When I returned home, looking over the coins, I'm thinking "why did I buy that? or that? and that? Mostly type coins from series I don't collect. Impulse buys have been very hard to combat. Lucky some of my impulse buys I've resold for a profit. It's at those times I think to myself "I'm a genius", then I come back to reality.
  • Just before the turn of the century....I bought a lot of Morgan and Peace Dollars......

  • I usually wind up binging at the Summer ANA's. Dropped 4 or 5k on a variety of Morgans and Double Eagles in a matter of an hour or two in Milwaukee.

I was thinking "no" but I remember now, I got my 1870, 1867 and 1869 Indians in AU all at the same time, which was unexpected - it made sense to find them all together though, since they all appeared from one well-matched collection brought to my attention. That was back in 2001, I believe.
  • Oh yeah ... once I was in a bad mood, so to make myself feel better I spent ... well, I shouldn't say, that wouldn't be very proper, but suffice it to say that it would choke a donkey image

    It happens.
Once in an auction I bought lot after lot. Nice coins; I thought at the time good value. Maybe I should go back and reassess the moment at todays prices..

Binge? By your definition, every freakin' day image

I bought a Sparkletts bottle full of 90% and silver dollars once a few years back... Averaged 5X face. Sucker weighed over 300 Lbs. All of the dollars are still sitting in plastic roll tubes waiting for the day I go through 'em. Sold a bunch of the Franklin/ Kennedy/ Washington and Roosevelt recently for more than I paid for the lot...

I bought a total of 62 common date Quarter Eagles and Half Eagles (Indians and Libs) from a dealer friend recently, just before the run-up in gold price. Average cost all in about $185 per. Some are nice enough to go in, some are ex-jewelry. A real mixed bag. Just haven't had the time to send 'em out - but the box holds the SDB down nicely image.

Might have the opportunity to go halves with the same guy on a monster box of 1996 Silver Eagles, if we can negotiate a good price with the owner... Might be an interesting bulk submission there, since I don't think that they've given a 70 yet...

Couple of Long Beach shows ago I paid the most money over sheet I have ever paid for a coin - a gorgeous Proof IHC from Rick Snow. Never would have done it, but he paid a mind-blowing price to me for a toned MS IHC I had in an ANACS holder... I felt very binged after that.

    Yeah, lots of binge stories...

At last November's Baltimore show I ran into a dealer who had 30 AU Barber dimes, quarters and halves that I needed. Two months later at this year's FUN I bought another 27 AU Barbers from him. I'm not sure if this is true binge buying as I was looking for the coins anyway, they just happened to be available in a larger quantity than I expected.

Are you talking about my winning bid for the Syracuse Hoard of over 258,000 wheats? image

Although a somewhat risky thing to do, it was a boyhood dream come true to have a shot at owning and searching all those Lincolns. I was pretty confident that at the very least I'd come out of it with a free batch of whatever I chose to cherrypick and hang onto. What made it even better was that my wife gave me her approval to bid like I meant it.

Almost two years later, I'm thrilled that I got the opportunity and seized it. And if it hadn't been for a thread on this message board, I never would have known the lot was listed on EBay.

(Still love those gem Mercs, however.)

I have-- it was a BAD idea. I bought a coins I knew I needed but didn't have any idea what I should be paying for them because I didn't bring along any sheets. I paid way too much at a show for a Proof Jefferson nickel-- fortunately, "way too much" meant $75 instead of about $30, and not thousands of dollars. image
