Picked this up at the Sacramento Show today.

Care to guess its grade?

And yes, the price was very right..............
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    MS64 (not FS)image

edited cause I failed to mention: the obverse is a 65 and the reverse is a 63 = MS64 (not FS) image

MS63... anything over is either an overgrade or the picture is misleading. Cheers, RickO

65FS (I know it really isn't FS, but I'll bet it says that on the holder)

"Monticello" almost looks doubled.image OK I give up!image
  • I would grade it MS63
If that's NGC, on a Jefferson, could be as high as 66
    ANACS, should be 63
    Looks like 5 steps.

    If it's ngc - 66 non FS
    If it's PCGS - 65 FS

Edited to add I would grade it 64 Non FS

    64 no FS
  • Check out this one on Teletrade.image

    Teletrade PCGS 1950D MS65
  • PCGS seems to be very liberal on 50D's since the spread is so small between 63, 64 and 65. They're liberal w/ regard to steps as well for the same reason. If this coin were any other date, it would grade 63 or 64 with no steps.

    Like I said, tough crowd!

BTW, the columns are there and any obverse scratches are on the plastic. The coin has some amazing luster with a rich golden tone about it.

My humble '63 mint registry set, not much, but it's mine!
  • I think I'd send it back for the "grade guarantee", Sorry but the must have been sleeping that day.

I dont know hear are some I sent in all back in MS-65 no full step. imageimageimageimage

    Hoard the keys.
  • Type 2: Those Jeffs look to have 5 steps so should have gotten the PCGS designation. The '50-D in the original post looks to have 4 and 3/4 steps so isn't FS from what I can see. It is also a late die state. I can't see the luster in the photo so I would have given it a 65 or so - it sounds like it looks better in hand.

Geez, how can I get them to grade my nickels like that? I've got a 49-S and a 50(P) here that I regard as "near miss" coins, but I'd be about $2K richer if I could get them onto the desk of the same guy who graded your 50-D.

I guess there is a market for folks who buy the plastic, eh!

my original thought was MS65 non FS and a late die state to boot. as others have said, encapsulted coins like this are the reason i chose to sell my Mint State collection and focus on DCAM and toned Proof Jefferson Nickels. i still search for raw Mint State coins but have grown tired of the prices for the true Full Step examples in grades MS65 and above.
