Ever misplace a coin and have a panic attack trying to find it?

Or at least get very distressed? Happened to me this afternoon.

I could not figure out what happened to a wallet holding 59 civil war tokens I bought years ago at an auction and a partial
pack of silver certificates. A few months ago I got new carpet for the house and I was afraid that in moving things around
they got misplaced or thrown out accidentely, I was feeling rather sick about it as I searched every conceivable place I
could think of where they could be.

Finally I looked in the closet in the bedroom and there they were in a plastic bag along with some other numismatic stuff.

A big feeling of relief came over me after that.

I have 2 books of 2X2's that I put into a box in one of my closets, and I still can't find them. I know they're here somewhere!

  • I misplaced a Half Eagle (PCGS graded, no less) once and it took me about a week to find it. I tore the house apart trying to locate it. Turns out I went into the kitchen to get an aspirin, and I had placed the coin in the medicine cabinet and it slid behind some pill bottles! image

Never misplaced a "big" coin but I certainly have with various ones, particularly when I had a move one time; I understand your relief when they turned up!

I was more concerned when I recently misplaced the keys to the SDB.

I have been missing my father's Columbian commem going on five years, and when I was a boy, I misplaced an 1833 large cent for a couple of years but eventually found it.

I had misplaced an R-6 half dime (1829 LM-11) for two or more months. Finally found it hidden in the bottom of a small box of coins.

When my father passed away, all his collection came to me. He had a fairly complete set of commem half dollars and some commem gold (all classic commems).

As I was going through it all, I thought I had lost the Connecticut commem. I scowered the house, reviewed his inventory, went over and over in my head, where it may have gone.
He had it documented, but I never could find it.

It turned out he had two Bridgeport, Conn. Commems, and one was mismarked as Connecticut image

Man did that have me going for weeks.

One time I misplaced a small box with approx 20 Half Eagles, 4 Eagles, 6 Double Eages, and 80+ AU-MS64 Walkers.

I was sure it was stolen. Looked everywhere and tore the house apart.

A year later when I unpacked a box from storage I found it in the bottom. WHAT A RELIEF!!!!!

I lose stuff all the time. Everytime I do I hope to lose something else soon. Because I always find the previously lost item while I am looking for the next! image

I misplace books all the time... as far as coins since they are locked up at the bank I sometimes forget what I own and buy duplicates.

  • I remember hearing about one of the major auction houses losing a valuable coin from a consignor, I don't believe it was ever found.
I assume they paid for owner for the loss.

I lost one coin for 11 years. It was an 1856 Flying Eagle cent VF with a plugged hole in it. Needless to say, it was quite frustrating for a long time. Fortunately it finally turned up.

Of course. This is an integral part of numismatics.

All too often. Makes me worried sick, even if the value in minor.

The good part is I often find other things/coins when looking.

This has happened to me a few times. I remember once when I was taking inventory of my grandpas collection, which 2.5 days to complete, that I was counting original Cincinnati bank rolls of Franklin Halves and first I counted 20 rolls. Then I put these and the rest of the collection away for the next day. That second day when I was unpacking all the coins, I only counted 16 rolls. It turns out that my Grandma had taken them out for my cousin. The thing is that we split the collection up 5 ways for my 3 cousins and brother.

It had me going for about 2 hours.

Often...and "panic attack" is the right descriptor. My wife dreads any sentence which begins with, "Where'd you put my..." She is invariably the prime suspect, though she never touches the coins.

I used to have that happen once in a while until I got organized.

And it gets worse as you get older.

Everyday. Today's panic attack was for a Dansco album of Buffalo Nickels. Found it after an hour. Did lose a 1895 O Morgan for six months once in the shop. Then one day we found it in a old bag in the back room.

Too many times!! Most of the time, sometimes months or even years later, the coin turns up.

In 2005, I bought an 1815/2 CBH. After patiently waiting for the coin, I contacted seller and to my dismay, seller produced a tracking number that indicated the coin had been delivered! My wife had a home daycare and she did not like the postman to ring the doorbell so (unbeknownst to me) she filled out the signature slips in advance and the mail carrier agreed to use them as needed and simply place the package in the mail box.

With my key date missing, I was in a quandary. None of the scenarios I envisioned had a happy ending. I figured I would be taking a very painful loss. About 3 weeks later, I noticed that the concrete steps to the house had shifted slighty, creating a gap. This would happen from time to time and I would ordinarily simply shove the steps back in place. This time, I pulled the steps away and much to my surpise was a bubble mailer. Apparently, my wife dropped the mail several weeks before and my package had slipped through the crack! That was quite a relief!

Over 50 years of collecting and I've never lost or misplaced a single coin. I still have every coin I ever collected since 1957.
  • I thought I lost my AU-55 1932-S quarter. I couldn't find it for months. It turned up inside of an Intercept Shield box, in my safe deposit box at the credit union where I work.
I sure did feel like a moron, but I was happy to find it.

1916-D PCGS AG03....put it on scanner for a pic (prob back in 1999) and then lost the coin. Noticed it was missing a couple of days after the scanner pic but I just couldn't find anywhere! I remember thinking at the time, well, there's a $500 mistake! I 'd written the coin off than suddently, found it, 6 mointh later. Like Xmas in April!

    I misplaced a binder yesterday full of silver dollars and was certain I was robbed. Freaked out crazy;
The binder was sitting under another one right on the table here. duh.

Absolutely... and since I keep my coins in only two places, the search becomes rather frenetic. I always find it, but the adrenaline dump is enough to keep me awake for two days. Cheers, RickO

Yeah, I had a rare VAM, top of the condition census. Couldn't find it in any of the safe deposit boxes or any other place I could think of. Must have checked every place thrice at least over the course of weeks. You know where I found it? In my email. I got the note from PCGS that my order was ready and was being shipped. Forgot completely that I sent it in for attribution. For you YNs, this is what will happen to you too in time.
