1967 Set for $16.90

I was going through my old magazines/photos box and came across my favorite magazine, 1970 Football Street & Smith. Here's an ad from that magazine

I'll take 100 of each. let me know where to send payment. image
  • At 8%, that $16.90 would now be worth close to $300

    Still a few hours left

    And here's another one

Still a very good purchase at that price

I have 1973 and 74 Street and Smith Football magazimes somewhere, I'll look for any interesting cigarette and baseball card ads

I always enjoy when someone posts a retro-ad/article with the prices.

In 1972, I went into a shop that had antiques and a counter with a mess of sportscards.

They had 52T's for 25 - 50 cents a piece and I think they wanted a buck or two for stars and I told my best friend - John - highway robbery!!!

    I'm a real visionary - aint I? image

    Thanx

Great old ad - I don't feel too badly since I wasn't even around to "pass" on that deal - though I surely wish my older brothers would've gotten some! image
  • The thing is it was still probably overpriced for the time. LOL

I remember looking at old Larry Fritsch ads in the late 70s and early 80s and his prices were always extremely high.
  • I use to order from Wholesale Cards in Conn. in 1971-72, I still have an entire catalog somewhere. I remember ordering a year like 1957 and he would send out an assortment of cards for $5 or $10 something like that, I remember getting a 57 Mantle and an 57Aaron that way. They came in a small brown envelope, no card holders, no packing material, no insurance, just cards in an envelope. I still have the envelopes as well. image good old days.

There may be truth to that. Most likely the sets were hand-collated, too, and the hand that collated them probably didn't care about condition.

Don't assume those were MINT, perfectly centered sets. If I had to guess, I'd guess way more 7's than 8's or 9's.

Still, not a bad deal, in hindsight.

I still have my beat-up and dog-eared 1967 Street and Smith baseball edition from my childhood and I recall posting a scan of a similar ad for the '67 Topps Baseball set and I recall it was $12 or $13 for the complete set.

The funny thing for me was that I was collecting that set in 1967 and I probably spent more than $18 over the course of that summer collecting those cards and still having an incomplete set with lots of dupes. I vividly remember seeing that ad and thinking it was a rip-off since since you were paying double the price of the cards with no gum. image

Excluding the inflation factor, how could Topps make any money back then selling 690 cards for $15?

I stumbled upon this old post. I actually DID buy from them several times in the 70's. I remember in 1979 I put together a few bucks and bought a 1971 Topps Football set shipped from them to me for $6.95. It came in brown wrappers, with maybe 60 cards per package, so they weren't pristine. But they were still awesome. I picked up a 1973 set from them for $4.95 I think. Again, the same brown wrappers.

Not sure if I bought from them, but in the mid 70s (as a pre-teen having my mother write checks for payment) I bought the 5th series 71 baseball and 73 complete set baseball, 1970, 1971 and 1972 (first 2 series) football.

    BTW - Happy Birthday Greencow!!!!!!!!

I always enjoy seeing those. I have the '71 Street and Smith magazine and it has the brand new 1971 baseball sets for around that same price. When I was a kid and these ads were around 7-8 years old, I was temped to get a check from my mom and send it in with the ad to see if they'd still honor the price. LOL. I'm sure if I had actually asked my mom to try this, she would have laughed at me.

I remember ordering cards from Bruce Yeko, the owner of Wholesale Cards. I bought a 1963 Topps Clemente for $29.95, and I still have it. It resides in a PSA 7 holder. image

I believe they were individuals who purchased cases of cards from Topps and put the sets together for resale.

You also have the payment plan option if $14.95 was too much to pay at one time...

I also used to buy from the Card Collector Company. I bought the 1959 Fleer set, but it came without card #68 (it was advrtised that way)

THat was my first thought as well, the prices seemed high. In the late 80's, current factory sets were going for about that price.

By the way, $1 in 1970 is the equivalent of about $5.44 today....so that 67 set is really pricey at ~$92. I think i'll pass!
