Agreed, very ugly. And I know I am in a minority on this. It ranks up there with other badly designed coins, i.e. anything 'Walking' to include halves, dollars, and $20 gold...and while we are on the subject of ugly coinage, lets go to the $5 and $10 Indians too.

Apparently you've never seen a Shield Nickel, especially a circulated one. As far as I'm concerned, if it began being minted after WW II ended, it's ugly.

I think the SBA Dollar and the Special Olympics commemorative are worse...

The 1991 USO commem dollar beats the Ike dollar hands down when it comes to fugly.
I agree with bear the Ike dollar is gorgeous in superb gem grades. I am also a huge fan of the 1973-S silver proof "brown" Ike and have been hoarding them for quite some time now.
There are several that I don't care for, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I don't comment on coins I don't care for. Back to the old thing of "collect what you like", so I see no reason to make negative comments about coins that someone else may like.
I think part of the problem with the Ike is it's so danged BIG. It reminds me of those metal switch box slugs you find at construction sites. If it were silver, it'd have a different feel, but it just feels like a chunk of metal. I've grown fonder of the design over the years, though. The Prez dollars beat it hands down for ugliness.
I like Ike. Our other modern coins are bland, but it wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have to look at the same designs for the last 60+ years on most of them. Barbers do nothing for me. I like the reverse on Barber qtrs and halves, but why did he have to make he same generic obverse design for the dime, qtr AND half?
If you consider the "style" of Frank Gasparro, you realize he's sort of an interpreter of faces. The Larger than life eyes that look sort of "comic book" style what I'm refering to.
You see it in the Anthony Dollar too.S ince he was the Chief Engraver, he did what wanted to.. I say The Susan B. Anthony Dollar is the runner up, for Ugly.
I Think Frank was a bit disappointed hat his Liberty design got shot down by the Feministas.
I'm surprised you dont like the largenesss of the size - Remember they were introduced to be "silver dollars" --(primarilly to keep the casino's in Vegas supplied).

Well, you just chose the 2 most beloved US coin designs that have been produced, the Saints and the Walking Lib Halves. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but... if you dont like Saints or Walkers, what do you like?
The obverse of the Ike dollar isn't the best, but it certainly isn't the worst. The reverse is another story. The reverse, which was mandated by congress, was based on the Apollo 11 mission patch. The design was fine for a shoulder patch but that is all. On a coin it is just kitsch...and the agony was continued when the reverse design was also mandated for the Susan B. Anthony dollar.

They look like the Shell gasoline "Mr President Coin Game" tokens from 35 years ago...
>>
I think the Mr President Coin Game pieces exhibit extremely good art and manufacture.
Take a look at a few of these in hand. Like most all Franklin Mint products they are very well done.
I like Ike. Gasparro did about as good of a job with it as he could with the subject matter. I don't like the bicentennial design but it's not awful either.
The new dollar coins I've seen are not very attractive though perhaps they'll grow on me.

I like Morgans, anything Seated, Flying Eagles, Barber reverses, Drapped Busts, Heraldic Eagles. I guess the Art Deco type designs really do not appeal to me at all. I also forgot to mention Peace Dollars and the Eunice Kennedy Commem as other designs that I simply cannot stand. Peace Dollars=glorified silver rounds worth melt...not that I would not sell one for a profit, but I would not pay more than melt for one.
And I think there was another comment about the reverse of the Ike being nice as it was a patch for the Apollo mission. I would be more inclined to agree if the patch were accurately and FULLY represented. Most of the smaller details of the patch were left out of the coins design, a mistake IMO.
