Will PCGS Cross a Coin and Maintain the Pedigree?

BarndogBarndog Posts: 20,513 ✭✭✭✭✭
I saw this Barber Dime on ebay that has "Pittman" on the label. That got me to wondering if PCGS would maintain the Pittman pedigree on the label if the coin were submitted for crossover (assuming it crosses, of course). I'm not planning on buying the coin, I'm just posing a question.

JMHO... if the pedigree can be verified, they will... send all substantiating documentation. If none, then it could go either way. Cheers, RickO

I hope they would. Especially this being a better known pedigree.

  • Not a crossover, but, I sent in a PCGS slabbed "Rainy Day Collection" pedigreed on the slab ($20 CC) for a regragde. It came back without the pedigree. I was shocked but didn't really care that much since it was a minor pedigree. I'd say nothing is set in stone.

I submitted a few NGC Jules Reiver coins to PCGS and they did maintain the pedigree. I submitted them in the NGC holder and wrote really big on the submission form

Yup, they do it. I called and inquired about my 1832 LM11.2 Reiver coin when it was NGC. They said they'd keep the pedigree with the coin if it crossed. They just said to write a note on the coin and submission requesting it.

The coin is raw now so I've got to go through a more long and drawn out process of having them confirm it is the coin I say it is. Which is why I haven't done it yet. lol

I submitted the Duke's Creek 1857-D gold dollar in an NGC MS-62 labeled "Duke's Creek" and not only did they cross the coin, but they crossed the pedigree to "Eliasberg". I provided the necessary documentation on the submission forum and wrote in very large letters: PLEASE ADD "ELIASBERG" TO LABEL. DO NOT ADD "DUKE'S CREEK".

From what I have heard and read, if you give clear instructions, most of the time they will do what you want them to.

Edit: Gee, that coin in the OP is expensive.

yes, I would assume they do. I crossed all of my Eliasberg world coins from PCGS to NGC, and of course with that pedigree, NGC kept the designation.

thanks, all. Clears up my question. And yes, RYK, that coin in the OP is wicked expensive!

    i think it is.

  • I was wondering something similar. I have the Millenium Set SAE and Sac $1 in ICG holders with the pedigree "Millenium Set". The SAE has the mint of issue listed as "(W)" and the Sac $1 is graded as "Burnished". They also have a number which I don't care about. I'd like them to match with the rest of my PCGS stuff but I want to keep the pedigree and other notations they were given.

Will they do this (which amounts to trusting ICG to have labeled them correctly)?

Plastics. Didn't our fathers tell us to invest in plastics?

  • Yes, PCGS will carry a pedigree over on crossover, if it is a pedigree that PCGS recognizes. For example, Eliasberg, Garrett, etc. will be carried over without question. They have carried over more recent collection provenance as well. For example, they crossed several of my Battle Creek Morgans, and retained the "Battle Creek" pedigree on the PCGS insert.

No, it is not. Pedigrees and provenance are important to some of us, regardless of plastic. Therefore, carrying the pedigree over is important to some of us as well. As far as the crossover concept, that is also not just a matter of plastic - I happen to like the PCGS holders. I also like the consistency of their grading - not perfect, but in my view the best there is. Therefore, I like all my coins
to be in PCGS slabs. I also like my sets to be in matching slabs ... much nicer when I set up a display. My preference is strong enough that I am normally willing to accept downgrades on crossover - which only proves that's it's not just about the slab grade, as far as I'm concerned.
