2007 Sport Kings are out! Just ripped a box.

Before you ask why I wasted my money, I have this story to tell. I just came back from the Shriner's show in Wilmington, MA. For the first time in my 20+ years of going to the show I filled out the entry card for the door prizes. I won the 6pm door prize, $200! I was told I only have about half an hour to pick out something. There is so much to pick from when the $$ is free. I went to a local dealer that I buy my Heritage etc. from and spent it there. I paid $190 for my box, and he got the additional $200 from the show. Now I knew it was a gamble, but I had the extra cash to waste, so why not?

I just opened the box and got:
Patrick Roy Base
Lou Ferrigno Base
Mario Andretti Base

Hulk Hogan Mini

Reggie White Cleats card.... 90 inserted according to their site
image

Don Mattingly Autograph card....94-99 inserted according to their site
image

and this:

image

Limited to 10 according to their site.

My only complaint is that the cards are not individually numbered, it makes it hard to figure out exactly what you have. For $400 for 7 cards you would expect a numbering system of checks and balances.

Some people feel that individually numbering cards has b*stardized the hobby. Maybe they were trying to remain authentic, without actually being licensed...

If all of the packs are like that, it may do a little better than I expected.

edited to add: I had to insert a * because of sensors...give me a break...not a curse word.

They're going on ebay as soon as I can get them there. I figure I'll get the most for them before everyone has them out. I feel that they will come down, although they don't seem to be going too high now. Most can be had for around $20, making a set for $1000 should be pretty easy, as it is only 48 cards.
  • gameusedhoopgameusedhoop Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭✭
Rube, they look quite somewhat like the Perez sketches from the A&G set. Not great in my opinion. You can't touch them as they all have a "seal" on the top loader that they come in. Unless you break the sticker.
  • rube26105rube26105 Posts: 10,225 ✭✭
oh i get all cards come in a toploader with a hologram seal at the top- i didnt read that part-i got a fe old sk 35s 8s i think they are i hold onto just because they are so cool lookin,sportkings/playball/50 bowman fbs & baseball all had fantastic coloring in them
  • Considering the fact that you had a certificate for $200 I can't fault you at all. Considering some of the big hits it's not that bad of a risk at $190.

Nice box break. That was actually one of the best box breaks I've seen so far. Nice pick up on the Clemente gold version.

no doubt ya did good, i would have got the biggest duds you could possibly pull, i have a curse whern it come to opening expensive stuff, its called the curse of the rube, they win , i lose lol!!!i always say im not gonna buy anymore, but i always have too,ya hear the box talking to ya buy me ,lol, then ya open it and it tells me sucker-gotcha!!!!
  • gameusedhoopgameusedhoop Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭✭
I'm putting the Clemente up for $199 to start, $350 BIN. The Mattingly will probably be $49, $99 BIN. The White will probably be $25, $49 BIN.
    I'm loading the Clemente now...
  • Good luck. I think they are nice cards.

I wouldn't have tried it at $400, but for $190, why not. I am happy with it, but not thrilled by any means, there are so many "bad" pulls that you really have to feel lucky to do OK. I may buy a few here and there if I really like something, but the gambling is over for me.
  • Not a knock on you but I say big deal. Looks like 20 other products that are out or will be out in the next 6 months. The modern card market is due for another crash like it did in the 90's.

    Very nice Clemente card guh.

    Simple design appeals to me.

The base cards look rather nice.

If I have it correct, the retail on this was 500$ a box - which is one pack and 7 cards. Wow, that's very expensive!

Thanx for sharing and congratulations on the Clemente pull.

Retail might be $500, but many dealers had it for $399 tonight. This is a major show and wax prices are pretty competitive. A&G was still $105 a box, but if an item isn't new or hot, then good luck. The box is a shoe box, full of foam, with one small box inside, just big enough for the 7 top loaders that the cards come in. I put the 7 cards up on ebay for one day auctions, all with BIN's and the Andretti base card sold for $20 already. Not too bad, only $170 to go to start turning some profit because of the door prize win.

  • These are some of the worst looking cards I have ever seen. If his name was not at the bottom of the card, I would have had no idea that was Ray Leonard. One would think that for a premium product they could have gotten a better artist.

  • After looking over the checklist, I think the Nigel Mansell case card would be the only one I'd be interested in. Maybe if Series B has a Cal Ripken or Richard Petty, I'd buy one of those...

Gameusedhoop had a nice box break, but yes I've seen alot of horrible ones. People buying cases and having duplicates of not only the base cards but also the memorabilia cards too.

I think the packaging is pretty nice - I wouldn't mind having one of the boxes that the cards came in.

But, as I said - a bit pricey for me.

Heck, I'm 60% finished with my 63F BB set in PSA 8 and only have a little over a grand invested!

But, for the adventurous and deep pockets? Looks like a lot of fun to take a gamble and see what ya come up with?

I have to agree with the person who said this may end up resulting in another modern card crash like it was in 1990. I can't believe how much they are asking for a pack of that stuff... I'd much rather buy a vintage star.

Check this out, this is exactly why I am staying away from this set with a 10 foot pole.

Yeah, it's sad what these modern day card companies are going too. Cutting up a cheap patch, and make it all out to be something so great and rare.

    image
  • Wow baseballjeff that post was an eye opener.
  • Reese3333Reese3333 Posts: 2,407 ✭✭
Ok, so I guess I am a little bit confused. Is the Robinson patch from a game used 1997 players jersey or did they just cut a $2 patch and insert it in their $350-$400 pack? I guess I would really like to know what it says on the back of that card.

Ok, nevermind I went to the Sport Kings website to see what they said about them:

    It says:
"Badge of Honor" A tribute to baseball pioneer, Jackie Robinson. The Badge of Honor stunning cards feature pieces of emblems worn on Jackie Robinson Day."

Thats pretty sad to say the least. I can't believe someone is going to pay $250+ for this card.

Yeah, considering you can buy the patch for a few bucks.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I thought everyone should know about it. It really stinks what modern card companies are doing. I feel bad about it because it clearly reflects what peoples opinions of card collecting is like. Just think of all the sweet cards a newbie could get and not get this box of .... I for one would much rather have a nice PSA 6 Mantle.

This is a great looking product but I think the price point is way too high. I signed up to get dealer pricing but the dealer cost was way too high for this product. Check out the prices on EBay for the cards. You better hope you can beat the odds if you open any of this. The good news it there will be a Series B.

I'm just going to wait it out and pick up the regular cards for cheap as folks try to recoup any money on this product. That case break was painful. Sheesh.

So, a full set of base cards would run about $250-500. Not terrible, but not sure if it's worth it.

Seems like a pretty good deal considering the scarcity. I doubt the set would lose value at that price. I like the painted design of the cards and would consider a set myself if I hadn't started the topps 206 mini set last week.

I myself am not going to go for it. Think of all the sweet vintage you could get for that! Next year, these companies will come out with the same ol same ol, just different players.

There have been enough of these cards ending on ebay that I can finally put a price on them, as a few of you have been
interested. Here are average ebay prices:

    Regular Cards

    Williams 35
    Ryan 25
    Mansell 12
    Carter 10
    Street 12
    Hellmuth 8

    Minis

    Aikman 22
    Seaver 27

Total on the 8 cards is 149. I could do the lot for 135 dlvd if anyone is intersted.

    Thanks
