Honestly, how much of a premium is grading worth?

I saw an ad for Memory Lane auctions and they were boasting that they sold a 1975 Nolan Ryan for more than $29,000! Seriously, no matter what a professional grader says, is a 1975 Topps card really worth that much? Think of the classic vintage cards you could buy for that amount. I like cards in nice condition but honestly I can't tell the difference between a "7" and a "10" most of the time. If I can't tell the difference, I'm not paying a premium for it.

    That's what I said too! I have a 75 Ryan that I'd part with for $35.
  • So the answer to your question is that grading adds a $28 965 premium to cards

Like I've said before and I'll say it again; that $28K that was paid for a label with a 10 on it could've been better spent on nice raw 1960s/1970s sets IMO. The way it was done in the good ol' days. image

Econ 101. Grading is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

    There is a huge difference between a 7 and a 10.

9 and 10, not so much. But if you can submit for 10s in low pop cards of highly collected players (Ryan, Rose, etc), you are going to make good money.

With all due respect, we've had this discussion many, many times and there's no wrong answer IMO.

If it's not worth it to you - I can understand. But many - especially the registry folks - are chasing a dream and are willing to back up that dream con mucho dinero....

So, I guess it's worth it to them.

What is this card worth to you?

    image

I traded for it in 1992. I have zero invested. He shared some space at my table for it.

I'm not sure - but someone offered me some serious money for it - can't remember - but definitely over a grand?

My experience tells me - if ya can get a high grade - it will sell way better than raw.

I bought this card raw for 30 bucks:

If I put this card up "raw" on ebay - it would bring a bit - maybe 100 bucks?

But, housed in a 9 holder - and it's very nice BTW - it will bring way more than that.

So, I say toeMaytoe and you say toeMahtoe? It's all good at the end of the day.

Rick James once said "The Registry is a hell of a drug!"
  • I guess that Nolan Ryan mini "9" would be worth about $50-60 to me. I guess my motives for grading are different. I want to make sure the card is authentic and not tampered with.
