Are you a widget collector?
I am for sure, it's nice looking at the coins on here that costs thousands but being married with kids and working for the govt. I just cant offord them, sure I could sell everything and buy 5-6 in that price range but I like looking at all types. How about you?

I collect things that are really cheap; I do try to choose exceptional examples of whatever they are. So -- for example, while there might be thousands upon thousands of, say, large sized Capped Bust quarters in VG in the world, the one I bought and kept is the most appealing example of this coin in this grade that I have personally seen.
Isn't that about all you can do?

<< <i>No, but I do collect both inexpensive and expensive coins, high mintages and low, modern and classic, low grade and high, slabbed and not, toned and not. >>

as far as Widgets, Ive found them to be a very cost effective way of gaining nice examples of coins.
Love those Morgans all die cracked up for low money
Like I've said before, I am a Widget Black Hole.
I seldom pass up pretty widgets, even when I have multiples of 'em.
81-S Morgans flock to me like flies on a t--d.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.

Are these widgets ? My wife says I collect WAY too much stuff.
I really like shiny things too.
<< <i>Where do you draw the line between widget and scarce and rare? >>
That's easy. If I can afford to buy it, it's automatically a widget.

<< <i>Are you a midget collector? >>
Absolutely. I keep one in a broom closet in my basement.
<< <i> guess my perception of it as a 30.00 coin or less, hell my most exspensive one is my fugio xf that I paid 800.00 for. I would love to have coins that they show in here but >>
I think the term originated in these parts to describe coins that are interchangeable, seen one seen-em-all, traded sight-unseen like commodities, and as such describes many coins far in excess of $30. Common date Morgans in 66 ($200+) are certainly within the purview. Ditto common date Saints in 65 (well over $1,000).
The issue isn't price, but interchangeability. Many cheap coins are not easily replaceable, and many expensive ones are.
White Spanish Trail commem in 65? Available any day of the week, take your pick. At $3K, widget!
Original, no-problem 1919-D mercury dime in XF? Theoretically a $30 coin, but you can look all your life and never find one. Not a widget!
Like I was trying to get at before, just collect nice coins, whatever else they are ...

You might consider starting to collect contemporary coins and working backwards. Just a suggestion to get you started in this addiction.
