New Mercury Dime - VF/XF collection addition

MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

Without spending a fortune on assembling another collection I decided to work on
a Mercury Dime collection - housed in a Dansco album.

When ever I go to a coin show, I always spot some nice VF/XF dimes for short money,
so now, I can always come home with something, instead of grumbling about how
expensive Barbers have become.

I'll be concentrating on the 1916 - 1931 [ page one of the Dansco ] and
all the coins will be in this grade range. Just nice circulated coins with
most verticals showing.

Sweet Mike. Great idea on that. Only killer is the 16-D.

I think my next foray is going to be 1929 Federal Reserve Bank Notes by denom and district. 45 notes or so total from $5's to $100's. Some very tough like the $5 San Francisco.

Cool. That will be a fun set.

    Craig,

As this collection will be a raw one - if I locate a VG 10 - F 12 example of the 16-D it should
slide into the set without looking too out of place. I'll more than likely get a net graded ANACS
example because of cleaning. I'll just keep the insert attached to the album for future sale.

I doubt I'd ever crack out a PCGS coin for the collection.

nice coin. i am also doing the same thing as you but i am keeping
the price i am willing to pay for the dimes at about .90 cents
    each :-D

album is already half full and the first dupe roll is almost complete.
all under the current price of melt.

    patience is the key.

as for the key to the series, talk about a coin that is common
as dirt. it holds no magic for me and i will probably never buy it
    unless it is dirt cheap.

Very nice 19-D for a circulated raw set!

The reverse of your new purchase is especially attractive!

Excellent strategy for filling the 16-D hole in the page.

    Happy hunting!

    Mike,

Super idea and you can't go wrong with original, VF/XF silver. Love it!!

...for those of you who know me, you'll realize that I'm not working on this collection
with the same amount of fervor as the other series I collect.

Here's the latest addition - a 1920-S - the images are not the best but they're all I have to show:

Mercury Dimes, Winged Liberty or whatever (widgets) anyone calls them are really great coins. They wear out nice and they look great in mint state condition, too.

    Thanks for sharing.

Spent some time today at the SDB's and added a slew of Mercury dimes - I've been picking up
at one coin show or another - into the Dansco album.

When I got home this afternoon, I had an email from Harlan Berk
    and checked out their offerings.

I just ordered this 1927-D - which should look mighty nice in my collection:

I'm doing the same thing - I'm down to the last three coins (not counting the two '21s and the 16-D).

Some of those mint-marked coins from the 20s are pretty hard to find in VF/XF - even if they aren't that expensive.

VF-XF Mercs are difficult to find in original condition. They would have to have been pulled from circulation only a few years from time of issue. Most were cleaned. Good luck finding a full set of these precious little ladies. They are inexpensive but hard to find.

I try to pick up these VF-XF Mercs whenever I can find them. As others have said, quite difficult to come across them in original/not messed with condition (certainly, in circulated grades above F). I think they are a great bargain right now (especially, when compared to Buffalo's with similar mintage numbers).

I have a complete circulated set in a n old Meghrig folder with most of the coins in VG-F that I made out of MrsSpud's duplicates. Her set is mainly EF to AU with a F 16-D. I inherited her AG-3 16-D when she upgraded to the F.

Nice VF coins. The series in this grade can be fun.

About 3 years ago a AU set was started again. The biggest problem I have run into is that sellers forget that a AU coin is suppose to have luster. The second problem is that "Short Money" coins are not available anymore. A BU set would be easier to assemble.

Had some eBay bucks to get rid of - and as I have not
added a Mercury Dime to my album in some time, I thought
that this was a decent looking coin - and should fit into the set
    quite nicely...

Not too bad a 1918-S Dime, huh ?

    Nice pickup, Mike.
I just bought a grouping at the Lakeland show this weekend. I hadn't bought a Merc dime in years, but came across an old dealer back in a corner with some nice early ones, who was blowing these (and Barber dimes) out well back of Bid, just to get rid of them. I felt obligated to help him out image

Return the last one back to sender. It looks like it has some nasty hairlines on the obverse. The other coins look great though!

Coin arrived today - its hairlined to death - sorry to say - yet it has the right amount
of detail to fit into the Dansco.

I know - everyone says never buy raw coins on eBay - but you can't always judge
    a coin by an image.

I guess it was wishful thinking on my part...the coin goes back Monday morning.

I think the VF-XF Mercuries are a great series, quite a few sleepers though.
