Could the coin market get hotter next 5 years?

With the price of metals going higher and new coins from the mint I am sensing a bubble develop in the coin market? Could it be or is it just the beans I ate last night.

Numismatics is not a market. It is a hobby with an industry and market that follow it. It's tough to say how many numismatists there will be in the next five years. I predict fewer. So cold would be my guess.

I dunno brother, maybe yes.....then again, maybe no.
Every man is a self made man.
  • We're going to find out if the price of metals has anything to do with coin market prices. I'm betting no, even if silver does go to $20 like the bugs say, I don't think it will affect the value of Dizzy's commems, nor will the price of gold affect the value of Saints' Saints. But we shall see, won't we? Bout time to confirm or refute the notion that bullion prices relates to the collector coin market in any way. Coin market. Collector coin market.

  • I think we all should listen to Curly, he seems particularly dialed-in today! He must've come up for air after looking too long at matte proofs. I do enjoy listening to a man of reason.

This question seems similar to the one that asked about gaining the most or capitalizing from gold's momentum, or something like that. I'd think "hold your gold now while it is going up" is the best way to capitalize on the gold market. Please guide me if I'm thinking wrong.

  • He did say coin market. Collector coin market, not gold market.

    really bad.

Economic sanctions are not going to work against Iran like they did with North Korea.

yes, it will get more expensive to buy coins in the future, regardless of the economic conditions.

On planet Earth, "Iran has the world's second largest reserves of conventional crude oil at 133 gigabarrels, according to the CIA World Factbook, although it should be noted that both Canada and Venezuela have larger reserves if Non-conventional oil is included. Iran is the second largest oil holder globally with approximately 10% of the world's oil."

But back to the real question, I believe the coin market is slowing down, and it will only get hotter in five years if it gets cooler first.

Do you really think Bush will start something so big in the twilight of his term? I think he will kick the can for the next President to deal with.

It's the insane president of Iran who believes in the 12th Iman prophecy and worldwide Caliphate and Sharia Law and exterminating Israel who is starting something with his acquisition of nuclear weapons. That and the riches provided by those oil reserves puts the rest of the planet in peril, wouldn't you agree? Shall we do nothing?

I hope the market cools considerably. Since I do not sell, I would like to buy. Precious metals will not cool... they are headed into record territory. I do not pretend to know where the top is... but it will be way beyond $800/oz. for gold, and probably exceed $15 for silver. Cheers, RickO

We should but I would try everything short of our forces first. We need someone who can use the bully pulpit on a world wide scale and really put the pressure on that mad man. Maybe a little aircraft carrier diplomacy. Why not put a lot of forces on the border and make him a little nervous? Why do we roll out the red carpet when he has the gall to come over here? We should have more speeches by lower officials telling everyone of his human rights violations, etc.

You can always buy mint/proof sets from the US government. I don't think you have to worry about that market getting too hot.

Heaven Forbid but How? We cannot even staff the war we have going on now considering we have Navy and Air Force personnel on the ground doing Army jobs because we can not find enough soldiers. Iran has three times the population of Iraq and perhaps ten times the intelligence. Tehran is the most populated city in the world with the highest rate of pollution. Maybe they like other people deserve nuclear power to relieve the pollution.

Realize this is off topic but I get so sick of this saber rattling and I have a Persian ( Iranian ) Gold Coin.

Screw Iran .....we don't need their oil....Every dollar invested in them goes to Nuclear weapons against us.
Let's not forget China..and Russia..their vast lands are full of resourses waiting to be tapped.Europe will depend on Russia for their oil.China will be the next trading partner for oil.
And back to the real question of coins if the metals go higher ..so will coin prices as we have seen in the past.If Gold and Silver tank..so will those precious silver Morgans we have seen will take the biggest hit...

How much is a cruise missile? I don't want to work the rest of my life to pay the taxes for a downpayment on 1 cruise missile which may, or may not kill some Iranians who did nothing to me. Most of the people who are standing behind this don't have a pot to piss in and have no morals whatsoever.

again, OT, cruise missle cheap. our sons and daughters, priceless. all we need do is drop an atomic in the desert over there as the warning, no extensive killing, in the desert somewhere. and i'm sorry to be so nasty, but our sons and daughters, this is no good.

  • It sure may get rid of some nuclear reactors though!!! HUMMM! Crazy people do not need any nuclear wheapons!!! now do they!
  • I guess you like Pakistan firing nuclear war heads at India too! Pakistan should also be eliminated of their stash!

Imagine Ben Ladden having Nuclear weapons!

Up until now Ben Ladden has been allowed to use Commercial Airlines to do his dirty work!
  • I would bet that the very upper end of the rare coin market will keep going higher. However, if the metals keep rising, oil keeps rising, and dollar keeps falling, I see the bread and butter coin market falling as well. There won't be enough disposable income for the average collector to buy coins. Keep accumulating gold (close to spot) and you'll be fine.....sell off some of your gold stash in a few years and you'll be able to purchase some nice classic coins, possibly cheaper than they are today.

I was talking to a long term friend of mine...who happens to be one of the most financially astute persons I've meet in my life. He's says we could see a repeat of 1980 when people were lined up at the coin shops. Only this time he feels they won't be selling their sterling silver...they'll be buying gold.

There's a lot of U.S. dollars floating around the world.

it could be very interesting for all rare coins.

Got a real strong feeling that good times for you, Tom, are bad times for the rest of us. But as you said, Iran didn't ever do anything to YOU. And that's what it's all about.

  • No saber rattling here. Just facts..... Where can we get the true facts? Not TV.

I heard yesterday, we only have 8% of our troops in Iraq. American casualties down, Iraq deaths down, violence down.

Iran: heard our secretary of state, Ms Rice say just yesterday, we AND our allies will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. Germany and France are with us on this one. We won't go it alone with Iran. Nor did we go it alone with Iraq. We've fought many wars and have not taken any lands!

Coins/Economics: Pretty easy to fiqure out. How has the coin market done these past 8 years under Republican leadership? How did the market go for 8 years under Clinton/Democratic leadership? Which 8 years brought higher profits?

If collectors have more money in their pockets, they'll buy more coins. Period.
Democrats will raise taxes. Democrats want bigger government and more government programs.

Coin collectors are rugged individualists. We can do it on our own.

That "earth money" dime saver is AWESOME. PM me if you want to sell it ever!

And except for the Type II gold dollar, my basic US gold type set is complete - so despite an ever-inflating gold price, it doesn't much affect that particular type. Still have trouble spending that much $$$ for a button-sized piece of gold! image

If the trend continues then think about what people will be looking for. I think a hedge against inflation. Well you could go bullion but then it is subject to fluctuations as well. Now look at collector/investment coins. Great hedge and more price stability than bullion. Dang, I sound like one of those radio ads. Still, I could see it getting crazy. One thing though; a recession would quench the fire pretty quick.

Certainly can't get the facts here either. Between 2001 and 2006, federal NON defense spending, and federal discretionary spending, grew at the fastest rate since LBJ was president. Federal spending grew TWICE as fast during the 1st six years of Bush's presidency, vs. Clinton's.
Do I need to remind you that Republicans controlled the house, senate and white house during that time period?
oh yeah, they did so at the same time that they cut taxes-making GW Bush the only president in the history of the republic to cut taxes in time of war.
nothing like ensuring that our children will have to pay higher taxes to pay off our obligations for our war today, with interest, is there?

Regardless of Party, It will take wisdom, courage and a true

Bi partisan approach by our next elected leader, to work thru

all the problems that face us. Coin collecting is an elective choice.

It is not a mandatory act needed for survival. If the economic ,

monetary, geopolitical , military and trade issues are not dealt with

in an appropriate manner, then how hot the coin market will be in the
