If you were given 1 dreamcard. What would it be? With a catch!

As a baseball card collector, baseball fan, and sports lover in general. I find myself looking at many sports collectibles. Auto's, in all forms. Bats, balls, cards ect.....

But I have alway's loved baseball cards. Started collecting when I was very young. And though it may seem a bit strange. I always took care of them. Even when kids were just throwing them around the playgraound, building card houses, or even drawing horns and beards on the players for fun.

My father and I carefully put sets together. Team sets, and complete sets. Put them in boxes carefully. Took good care of them.

Put them in pages when they first came out.

My first Beckett price guide was in 1988. Since I was in highschool, money wasn't coming out of my A**. So I was shocked to see that some prices were so high. My first storage box of neetly kept cards was 1978 Topps. Great Murrays! Then 79,80, and so on. I will never forget my HUGE box of 1983 Topps. About 2500 cards. At least 5 Gwynn, 5 Sandberg, not as many Boggs though.
I even had a few 86 Fleer basketball packs, already opened, Maybe 3-5 total. Mangled Barkley, Ewing, Malone, Bird, Wilkins, and a few others. Trashed, but still cool.

Anyway, to make a long story short. I often think to myself. If I were to have 1 and only 1 choice for Any card in Any condition. Graded or ungraded. What would it be?

And the catch is. YOU CAN NEVER SELL IT. NEVER. This would ensure you were picking something of value other than money.

In other words, picking a PSA 10 1952 Topps Mantle to sell it for a ton of $$$$ to buy all the stuff you want is OUT!

So.... If you care to coment, please do.

What card. What condition or grade if any. It does not have to be graded. Would you choose a 1952 Topps pack. Knowing it had a Mantle? Never seen by ANYONE since it was made? Waiting just for you. Or would you just choose a PSA 10 Mantle rookie? Ruth? Honus? Or would it be a Montana rookie, pulled fresh from an untouched pack? Maybe a Tony Mandrich rookie! Just kidding!

What is YOUR dream?

I can Honestly say that $$$$$ aside, I would choose a PSA 10 Gem Mint 1951 Bowman Willie Mays Rookie. Favorite player, Favorite team. That is one thing that has never changed. And never will. I have to add a 2nd choice. My father LOVED Mantle. So if I had a backup choice it would be a 52 Topps Mantle. Reminds me of him.
Man I miss the 80's!!!

    54 Aaron. I'll take a PSA 9.

No need to be greedy image
  • Probably a '92 Classic Basketball SP auto of Shaquille O'Neal... the one that books for like $500 or so. It is NOT an easy card to find, so if I ever got it, it would be staying put image

I would probably take a 1933 Goudey Ruth #181 in PSA 7. One of the first cards I remember seeing at a card show I attended as a kid.

58 kahn's clemente. There's a story on the back called "my greatest thrill in baseball" and clemente reveals his thoughts about being frustrated and wanting to quit, and then seeing his mom in the stands and everything was ok again.

I've seen one but never seen one for sale. Don't even care if it's torn in half and taped back together. That's the card I would pick.

'66-67 Bobby Orr, PSA 9 (or better).
  • 3/4's or more of a Baltimore News Ruth PSA Auth is fine.

1962 Topps Baseball set in PSA 10.
  • 1949 Bowman Jackie Robinson in any grade. Actually, i'd prefer a banged up one, or a PSA 1... this shows that the card was well used or traded between kids or flicked into a hat or whatnot. It's a peice of history...

    Peace...

I've long considered the 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 the *perfect* baseball card. I'd love a nicely centered and clean copy. I don't need a PSA 9 or even an 8. A nice 6 would be just fine with me.

I'm even considering taking some of my annual bonus to buy one this winter.

Carl Yastrzemski 1960 rookie signed in blue sharpie that I got in about 1980 and stupidly sold in about 1982 when I lost interest in the hobby. I would love to get that back someday

A set of K-Bats or N173s would work just fine for me.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • I've mentioned this before but I think it fits with this thread as well. The card that fits this description for me growing up was a 1982 Topps rookie card of Cal Ripken, Jr. The card for as long as I could remember booked $75, which would take forever to get on my allowance. A local dealer and good friend had a pair of them in his display case and I always did my best to acquire a copy. One day my mom surprised me with a box of cards that she had bought. With her permission, I immediately took it to him and he traded me the Ripken rookie. The card is still in the same case it was in some 15+ years ago. I still remember the thrill of owning that card at that age. I have since acquired more valuable pieces of memorabilia, but that card will always be the most special.

There are only a few cards that come to mind, but at the top of ANY list would have to be: T-206 Honus Wagner. A card that old and that rare with that kind of history and allure; it simply has to be at the top of the list.

    Another fantastic choice!!
  • That is ALL GREAT stuff!

I love hearing about the choices we make and why?

That is what collecting is all about to me.

And YES..... The 33 Ruth is TOTALLY AWESOME looking!!! That IS a baseball card!!!

In all honesty pulling my card from a pack would be a dream of a lifetime. But I know how badly those things were centered in almost every pull. The excitement would wear thin the next day if it were a miscut!!!!!

So I just skipped right to the end.

Since it was a DREAM pull, I chose PSA 10 of course. I figure with all the setbacks in life. If I was Given a DREAM pull, I would go straight for the top!

I guess it would be the 1961 Mickey Mantle. It was one of the first vintage cards I obtained having traded a schoolmate for it. It was beat up but I really like the design of that set. A close second would be a PSA 10 Frank Robinson. Don't ask me why but that's one of my favorite cards of all time. I just like the color combination for some reason. Having a PSA 10 without the common fisheyes would be awesome.

Hey bjork73, are talking about about this Shaq card? This one is from my collection.

  • I would take a PSA 10 Honus Wagner and seeing I couldn't sell it, I would GIVE it to my sister so she could sell it and give me the money. The rules only stated I couldn't sell it, didn't say anything about having someone else sell it. image

1954 Wilson Weiners Ted Williams PSA 10
  • I'd take the T206 Wagner for obvious reasons but also because it has extra significance to me due to my being a diehard Pirates fan. It is the one Pirates card that I could probably never obtain even if I won the lottery or something.
  • I've always liked the '83 Topps Lester Hayes. I am a real dork, though.

Way into cool-looking cards. Don't really care about value.

'72 Clemente, '56 Mantle (which I'll inherit one day), '80 Gretzky, '65 Yaz, '73 Aaron, '73 Eller and Namath.

Those just come to mind off the top of my head.

Perhaps I'll begin a cool-looking MeatHook card thread one day.

Baseball: I'd take a T206 Ty Cobb portrait (either green or red, I'm not picky :?) ) with a Ty Cobb back and the front signed by Cobb, but not signed through his face where it would obscure the portrait.

Football: 1955 Topps All American Four Horsemen signed by all 4 and Grantland Rice

Basketball: PSA Authenticated 1984 Star Michael Jordan signed by Jordan

Hockey: Don't like it, so wouldn't want any of the cards in particular

  • Wow. I grew up chasing Frank Thomas rookies that seemed to me impossible to pull from the TOPPS wax pack. My ultimate dream card(s) would be a rack pack or wax pack of 1990 Topps baseball with a Frank Thomas No Name on Front showing through the pack. I could die in peace seeing a nice piece of memorabilia like that. Wow. I get chills just thinking of a find like that.
