Although I don't collect 20th century coins, this one is especially attrative to me. The color looks natural, but a few too many hits for a higher grade. I don't see any issue with it being graded by PCGS.

  • I don't know that it gets holdered today with the big AT push.....but it doesn't scream AT to me either so it was probably a coin that spent time in an album.

Looks cooked to me, doubt if would get in their slab today.

I like it. I'm betting it looks better in hand than in the photos.

That is why I think it is still in the older green holder... I bet it would not cross into a new one.

Edited to add.. I think the coin is ugly...

Not every AT'ish toner is AT. I might question the standards when it was holdered except that this kind of toned coin was not at all desirable in the past (old holder days). People were dipping them out to get blast whites. However, it is also a key date and some tough calls in those cases are given the benefit of reasonable doubt in support of the market apparently.

As has already been stated, probably looks better in hand. This coin looks a lot like a CBH that I have , PCGS graded, too, and within the last 2 years.

I understand other series have this look but you rarely see a washy toned like this. I too think that is why it remains in the OGH. Not often you see a key date remain in that holder, especially if a dealer is peddling it.

I actually like that coin very much. I would say that coin is definitely NT and has a completely natural look to it in terms of toning pattern and color coverage.

I'm not sure if the coin is 100% "original" but it's clearly market acceptable. I would happily buy it at "the levels" and expect it to sell without too much trouble.

Not sure what you mean by levels but checked Heritage and 64's been selling for less than 2K. This one has a heckuva toning premium.image

I believe that coin to be AT.... The color progression on the reverse is very questionable. That being said, I have stated many times, that the best doctors can make a coin undetectable, - this may be one. Live by toning, lose by toning. Those premiums are ludicrous. Cheers, RickO

PCGS does not regrade when reholdering a coin. They stand behind their original grade and then just reslab it which is what would happen for this coin.

    But why reholder it?

As it should. It's a gorgeous NT coin that makes so many other '32-S's look so plain and uninspiring. That coin has tremendous eye appeal.image

That is my thought as well. I think it looks like an NT to me.

As far as the premium, just try to find a nicely toned 1932 S or any 1932 for that matter. They usually have some ugly colors, much more so than this one. I actually like the look of this coin.

I like it and think it's natural, BUT in no way would pay that much premium for it.

I have some Washie's with that type toning that spent years in albums.

that dealer always has coins marked up to stupid premiums.
i bet that coin sold for a fraction of what they are asking just
four years ago and has shuffled from dealer to dealer never
    finding a home.

Some killer toning going on with that quarter...
I would'nt be surprised if it was upgraded to MS 64...
  • For those who claim it NT please tell me why? If you sa album... shouldn't we see more like this showing up?? Thoughts?

FC: Have you ever did a deal with theses people? The asking price is not always the selling price. Maybe someday if you see something you like just give them a call. The two Mercs that are in my sig line came from them and I certainly did not pay the Ebay or Web Site price. Yesterday I bought 3 more Mercs from them. This time I did pay their Web price mainly because it was under Ebay prices asked and well within published prices except for the 45P dime that I gave 50 bucks for. Man I was insane to give 50 bucks for a coin that is slabbed at only 64. Heck maybe it was the eye appeal that did it. image

On the quarter. It looks almost the same as a 16P Merc I put up here about 3 months ago. At that time everyone said it was NT but I had my doubts and still do. Only difference was that the coin is in a NGC holder. With that in mind I have questions about this quarter also.

  • Looks NT to me. Beautiful coin. I'd say yes, you did miss something.

Enlighten me please on how toning like this happens? Show me other coins that look like this. Thanks.

Ken my main reason for posting this coin was the color. Grade on this one is ok. No issues there, but I do not like the color on this one

Grade on my dime was OK also. My concern was color also.

No way this coin makes MS 64

PCGS and NGC have changed thier stance on toners before. I know there are some toners which they previously holdered, that they will not anymore. As a side note, why not send them a micro O and tell them you want it reholdered. I bet you do not get that coin back in a slab. They are human and with better information they can change thier stance if need be.
