I didn't see the JJ one, but the one on "People's Court" was pretty good.

I love Judge Judy. Boy, can she dress people down when they need it.

Sorry, I didn't see this particular episode.

There was a Judge Judy several months back where one person was selling a coin on the 'bay on behalf of another person. The deal didn't go down as anticipated for one of the parties, hence the appearance on JJ. I don't recall the exact outcome, byt JJ totaly reamed one of the parties a new one.

Yeah. And if she even suspects that you are a welfare cheat or not paying child support, you have zero chance of winning.

Are you sure it was coins and not currency?

I remember one where a guy got evicted from his apartment and was staying with a buddy.

The guy found his buddy's stash of Gold Certificates and National Bank Notes and gave a few of them away at the local strip club.

    That one?

Why are you afraid you would not have gotten away with any anything...that she would catch you? imageimage

As far as any Judge Judy shows about coins:

Nothing that was on recently...there was an episode on about a coin a couple of months ago.
Actually there has been more than one show about coins and quite a few about eBay stuff.

  • People's Court....The coin was sold on Ebay, the coin was overgraded , David Ganz, collector and attorney was an expert witness, coin was sold and advertised as MS-65, Mr. Ganz graded it no better than MS-63 which is what the collector who purchased the coin maintained.

Judge found in favor of plaintiff collector and ordered that the collector's money be returned.

Legally, it now sets a legal precedent (sp) If a coin is not graded correctly when sold on eBay or any other auction site, and an expert agrees, the seller is now liable if a case goes to court and the seller has to return the purchase price of the coin to the buyer.

    Personally, I think it's Great.

For those who might think the show is just TV , It is a real court, the judge is real and the decisions are real. They make a difference in the legal world.

  • Assuming it was a real court, the only court it would be binding on would be the People's Court. At best it could be considered persuasive and I'd love to hear the judge laugh when you try to cite to the People's Court.

ps. I'm going to check my Bluebook now and see if there is a citation format for the People's Court.

So the judge thinks grading is a science????

Even the experts can't agree all the time.

Thats why she had an experts opinion. Believe me, Mr.Ganz knows his stuff.... This 20 dollar gold piece was in a Do it yourself TPG slab. The differences between MS 65 and MS 63 are pretty apparent on a gold piece. If I wanted a second opinion on a grade, I'd go to David in a heartbeat. He was a contributor to the ANA grading book. He knows what he is doing and outlined enough of his numismatic background to impress the judge with his expertise. He has also testified as an expert witness with respect to numismatics in front of at least one other court before.

Also, when citing a case, don't they name the litigants and then cite the Judge's decision? I don't think another judge would scoff at the decision of another court in a case like this.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I think all those court shows are setup as legally binding arbitration - which I doubt has much standing as judicial precedent. Longacre can probably tell us for sure.
