Wakefield left off WS roster

just read it at boston.com.

Didn't see what I wanted: a certain reliever being left off too. Wonder who will replace Wakefield? My hope is Tavarez. He sucks, but not anywhere near the guy I won't say his name. Plus, he can effectively eat up three innings in a blowout.

  • I was pretty bummed when I read that, he's one of my favorite players and a reason that I always root for the Red Sox in the postseason. Our county is pretty well represented in this year's world series. We have Wakefield, Clint Hurdle (went to HS w/ my aunt) and Jamey Carroll who just bought a house about 20 minutes away from me.

I wonder if the thin air (read: reduced air resistance) in Denver had a little bit to do with the decision.
  • Thank God it wasn't Gagme.

    SHHH! Don't speak that name!
  • Wakefield simply doesnt have it anymore, I'm surprised he is still in MLB, especially Boston.

I suspect that Wake is still hurt.

I suppose that means Lester will start Game 4.

From what I saw, the roster is not set yet. There is NFW they will keep Gag-me, he's worthless now. The will probably add Tavarez and Snyder.

    Who? Gagme?

  • Wakefield has very little value in a playoff series, especially this one. Any time you use him you have to replace Varitek with Mirabelli. And his only chance to start would have been one of the middle games when the team already loses the DH, there is very little opportunity to use him. His postseason ERA was even higher than Gagne

He eats up about 200 innings, gives you a league average ERA, stats I think any team would love out of their #4 starter.
  • Im only answering this as a Giants fan.

I would almost drive a bus through a rest home to have a 17 game winner as my number 1 starter!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Just kidding of course.

    About the bus......

As far as a 17 game winner, maybe we can afford one now that Bonds is gone.
    Man I miss the 80's!!!

After all he has done for Boston, they leave him off? That is a big insult. What is the reason? If they feel the thin air of Coors field is not conducive to a ground out pitcher, then I understand and it makes sense. However, how did Nomo do well there?

  • Wakefield hasn't pitched in Coors since 1994, and his poor postseason showing could easily be the result of his injury.

  • I heard he was left off due to injury, nothing more.

He looked great for 4 innings and just lost the feel in the fifth. He must of been hurt because he would still be valuable coming in as a late inning change of pace pitcher.

  • Im just saying, who would most hitters want to face, Wakefield or anyone else? Seems like an easy answer. Sure some cant hit his stuff, but most can. Why arent there more knucklers if they are so great?

Because it's an incredible difficult pitch to throw effectively.

How many 4th starters can eat up 200 or so innings with an average ERA?
  • Wakefield is a heck of a competitor, team player, good 4th starter that eats innings and keeps his team in the game, gives the bullpen a rest etc. He won 17 games right? definitely contributed to the sox success and for a chunk of the season was the Sox' 2nd most reliable starter.

The knuckle ball is a tough pitch to master, its fun to throw when your playing wiffleball (it's the one good pitch I can throw!)

According to ESPN its strickly his sore shoulder. He'd be a great guy to bring in if your starter got knocked around early so you could yank him and save him for another game. He fits into Boston well because they score a lot of runs especially off the oppositions 3rd or 4th starter. You don't need four starters with low eras when you have that kind of offense. You need a starter who can pitch deep into a game to save your bullpen.
  • Plus he's not that expensive at $4,000,000.

I would take Wake, bum shoulder and all, over GagMe any day. I wish he was on the roster.

As a collector of Kyle Snyder cards, I was glad to see him added to the roster for the World Series.image
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
