Safety for our San Diego friends

Here's hoping that our numismatic friends and everyone from San Diego finds safety tonight...the area has been hit unbelievably hard by raging fires. My wife and I drove through heavy smoke this afternoon and feel lucky to be at home tonight (in Orange County). Several communities have been evacuated and some roads are closed, including sections of the 15 freeway.

John, I was on the phone with a few people I know in the Del Mar area. One guy was packing up the car & getting ready to evacuate his home; the other guy was thinking about doing likewise.

I'm south of it, but I can smell the smoke at times. A lot of people weren't at work today. Some had to evacuate, some took the closed freeways and couldn't get there without great difficulty. This is bad.

how do people feel about families building new homes in fire
    prone areas?

should other people pay for their mistakes via higher insurance
    premiums?

I am still waiting in my home in Santa Luz, near Rancho Santa Fe in North County. I am waiting for mandatory evacuation before leaving. I am ready.

I can see the fire burning in Fairbanks Ranch, it's scary.

Lots of areas are prone to disasters. Floods, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes... Trying to stop people from inhabiting such areas would render a lot of the country empty.

He's from my area. We're at least 280 miles removed from the current closest fire.

  • We had a tornado come through mid Michigan and whacked one small community pretty bad but the destruction is nothing like
what I'm seeing on TV from California.

It's heartbreaking seeing these homes going up in flames and the firefighters are so overwhelmed they can't do anything to
    stop it.

I am most concerned about Bear and now Numisma...

I wrote Abe yesterday to see if he was ok...no reply, which is usually immediate with him.
I am sure he is ok, but I have a feeling he was evacuated.

I know that Coxe is in San Diego, but not sure where. Hopefully, he's OK and will check in soon. I just heard from my cousin in La Jolla, and her family seems to be out of harm's way for now, reporting that the winds have died down a little, but that they'll keep blowing through Thursday and there's currently no fire containment.

NO!!!! - watching the news last night was dejuvu - same thing happens every year in CA - and although I wish the best and pray for the people who are experiencing the lost of their homes etc, I have a problem with people who continue to build in areas that have a history of trouble with nature - it's the same thing building a new home in a flood plain - when are people going to learn and when is the government going to stop bailing out these people - and again the government and insurance industry picks up the tab, which equates with higher premiums for everyone - and the wheel goes round and round!!!

  • There is no place safe from one kind of disaster or another. We have insurance to spread the risks.

So far my family's closest friends haven't had to move. Our prayers are out there for all the thousands affected.

yes there is - dont build in a flood plain when there's higher ground and dont build in a forrest area prone to wildfires!! AND stop using my money to spread the risks!!

Sorry, but you're full of it. This fire is the worst ever, burning places that have never burnt before and places that it was thought would never burn. So where are you sitting as you spout your misinformation? Try to convince us that you have smartly chosen a location that is immune to natural disasters oh wise one.
  • Does anyone know what it is like in the Jamul area? I've tried several times to call a friend of mine there but get no answer.

misinformation?? - go back to 2003 and the same is happening - let's hope there are no deaths this time around - smartly enough not to live in a flood plain and woods that turn to tinder within a flash - but I guess natural diasters can happen at any time, me, I just want to increase my chances it doesnt happen to me AND I not a burden on fellow taxpayers.

Things OK in Lake Elsinore area (Between Escondido and Ontario, CA), but can see smoke plume south from Fallbrook, and larger plume north at Lake Arrowhead. The good news is that winds have calmed here, and the Santa Ana winds are forecasted to die out today. This will slow the spread of the fire, and allow more helo and airplanes to be used to fight the fires.

Insurance company stocks are going to take a hit, if you own any it might be a good time to bail out.

    Dizzy,
I guess I'm a little confused. Some active forum member lives in Encinitas or else I somehow got the impression you lived in Encinitas. Anyway, glad you're ok. and Encinitas has been unscathed so if someone lives there they are OK too.

For whoever asked about Jamul, it is not a hot spot on TV.

    Best to all,
    Jerry

Braddick lives in Encinitas, and he's okay, though he's been working long shifts with the local police department. Also, R and I coins is in Encinitas, haven't heard from them.
