An ERA of Infinity ...

Anyone ever hear of this?

Read this earlier tonight:

To this day, he is one of only 19 pitchers in major league history with a career earned-run average of infinity.

Comments

  • I guess he came in to pitch, got no outs, gave up at least one run, and never pitched again.
  • Yep, that's how it happens.

Guess I just never thought about it before.

I am not what you would call a smart man.

When I was in college, two buddies and I had the "infinity club" that included these players. One guy went page by page through Total Baseball to make sure we had all the members. Interestingly, at the time, we included Wilson Alvarez, who later tossed a no-hitter. Alvarez finished his rookie season in the club, which was the only season for him in that edition of Total Baseball. And that was good enough for us.
  • I refuse to believe that dividing by zero equals infinity. No matter how many zero's you have -- even an infinite amount of them -- it will still equal zero

The ERA must be undefined, at least according to my inability to understand math conceps

Undefined is correct, but INF looks better in the box score than UND.
