Christmas help...need coins!!

Hello,
Christmas is coming soon and I would like to purchase some coins for my boyfriend. I am not a wealthy person but would really like to get him something special. So, I am looking for someone willing to let me make payments on some coins for him. I could start making payments now and finish paying off in time for them to arrive for Christmas. Anyway I am not sure which way to go but he only has 6 coins left to complete his Jefferson collection, yet he would love to own a Flying Eagle, (Just one of those coins I know he drools over). If there is anyone out there, willing to let me make payments on these coins so that I could do this for him please PM me. Also, any thoughts from you all on which would be more exciting...being able to have your first completed coin album or having that coin you always drool over? oooooh descisions decisions.
Thanks all
Ginger

The Jeffersons he needs are MS64 or better -- 51P, 51S, 52P, 52D, 53D, 60D
or an AU Flying Eagle

    Ginger,

It would be better if you posted this on the B,S, & T - Coins board. Someone over there interested in selling coins would likely see it and respond to you.

I have all kinds of coins, tokens and a few medals. I'm not a big time Stack's Auction collector. I don't collect for investment or value. When I see a coin I think is neat, I grab it. I collect a few coins by year and mint, like Lincoln and Canadian Cents, Westward Journey Nickels, State Quarters, Presidential Dollars and 2 or 3 others. I have some Proof Sets and Uncirculated Sets. I've been collecting for 34 years, so I have a little bit of everything.

"...or having that coin you always drool over? "

Why not get him a nice 1861-O half in near au? Cool coin, nice history story, not too expensive, silver, it's all good.

An AU flying eagle cent would be a nice suprise.
  • He has an 1856 Seated half but, in looking at his book he does need the Seated with arrows 1853-55 for his type set. Thanks for the tip I will place it on the BST forum too. Wasn't sure wchich one to put it on.

Get him the flying eagle... he really wants that.. and that leaves him the focus on the hunt, and achieve the ultimate satisfaction of completing it himself. He will always treasure the 'gift' cent. Cheers, RickO
  • I'm with Rick....get him the Flying Eagle......
  • I was leaning toward the Flying eagle myself just because he would always be able to think of me when he looks at it..or should I say drools on it. Where as, finishing the Jeffersons, then there would not be one specific coin that he could pick out as special...does that make sense? Loving all your tips and responses keep em coming!

I would just enjoy having a girlfriend who appreciated coins.
  • Funny that you mention that because, when we met I only collected Lincolns and he collected all of them but, an ex-girlfriend took off with his lincoln collection so, when we met, we made a complete, set so to speak. I know, how sappy is that *grin smile grin*

Soon after we were married 27 years ago, I bought my wife a set of golf clubs and shoes and took her to the private club where I was a member. A couple sessions on the driving range and one full round later, the clubs are still in the garage, good as new. When we bought our cabin on the St Vrain River, I showed her (didn't try to teach her, having learned a little from the golf dealie) what I did when fly fishing. She said "yeah, I thought it was something like that", and left me to it. When I got my scuba certification for the second time, this time with my youngest daughter so she would have a dive buddy and I could learn correctly this time, my wife said "you're a good Daddy" while assiduously not joining us. All of which is for the good, we need our separate interests. My point? It's obvious, but more than, I think it takes some nerve to come on here asking for credit to buy coins you cannot afford, and to top it off, don't even know what you want. Christmas indeed.

I would enjoy just having a girlfriend...er, Mrs. RYK would not be very happy about it, though. image

Actually, I will echo what Pharmer said above but will soften it up. While most of us male collectors appreciate (or would appreciate) our significant others to be supportive of our hobby, unless she were engaged in coins herself, I personally would not want my wife choosing coins for me.

Buy him an iphone instead. image

  • Wow! Pharmer you give a whole new meaning to the name Scrooge!!! Didn't mean to appear, as you put it.."Begging for credit" just would really like to do something nice for the man I love and am willing to save, plan, and scrimp on other things to give him that special gift. Haven't you ever bought something on lay-away for your wife or daughter ...or are you just too filthy rich to lower yourself to that standard? Merry Christmas to you too!!!

Get a nice flying eagle within your budget on the gift. ANACS ones are generally as safe as any others in circulated condition and more coin for the buck. He's already spent time and effort on the nickels and it would be better for him to complete the set. Besides, he might want to sell his set upon completion. The FE cent would be a keeper as it was an special gift.

  • Geeez Pharmer... Way to be harsh. There's a lot of us in this world who can't just walk into a Coin Store and throw down $500.00. And even us Beggars like to buy nice things for the ppl we love.

There's nothing wrong with credit, down payments or lay-aways. It sure isn't begging. It's just another type of business transaction. It's done thousands of times a day.

And what's wrong with asking advice on purchasing a gift? How many times as Joe Blow said to the sales lady: "Which do you think she'll like better?"

    Chill out.

Have to disagree pharmer. It's not credit, it’s layaway. And you CAN afford it with multiple payments just as well as paying all at once. I could have paid for my house with one payment, but felt that using that money for investments would yield better results than the home appreciation. Each to his or her own. Lighten Up and have a wonderful Holiday season.

I just want to say that I am "too filthy rich to lower myself to that standard."

    Ha. Haha. Nice.

I'd do the single coin, as an answer to your original question. You are right, he will alwys think of you as a result. I vote a nice flying eagle - to see one with luster is cool.
  • Ginger I hope that your boyfriend puts a ring on your finger by this christmas! A woman that buys her guy coins is a keeper!

  • I'd suggest the flying eagle cent as well. Just be sure to include a mylar flip to protect the coin from drool.

Good luck, Snap! I think that the BST is a great place to go to do what you are looking to do - make sure that you use one of the sellers who is active on this board, though. There have been quite a few *ahem* opportunists over there...

Instead of trying to pick out the coins for him, get him a gift certificate to pick out his own. My little brother does that for me, and I can tell you it is so much fun to have money to spend on coins....image

  • Moderncrapnut, Drool doesn't inhance the value of a coin...good to know, LOL We love these boards and have learned so much here and I appreciate everyone's help and tips. The idea of a gift certificate is not a bad idea either, didn't think of that. You have all given me alot to think about, and I know, whatever I choose he will love. I do think I should go with the flying eagle just as most of you thought. And just to make things clearer for you all, I can come up with $250 - $275 by then and I can make payments by credit card if that helps anyone out. So far, I have seen one very nice example of a flying eagle and would like to see if anyone else out there has a one you are willing to let me "beg for credit" for in that price range. All your offers have been greatly appreciated. When I do make a descion I will have him post it on here for you all to see after Christmas.
    Thanks again
