Passion for the Game Anyone?

I am new to this board. Im sure I will get some interesting feedback. I have been on other forums in the past. They are great. You can find many others who love the same things you do. Since the Yanks lost, I have seen many posts in regard to A-Rod, Jeter, Torre and many others. This has brought up an interesting point for me.

In another thread, it involved both sides of Derek Jeter. Some for, some against. Some say he's a choker, some say otherwise.

An interesting reply came up to a post I put up about Jeter. Involving stats.

I found it interesting that so many people think that stats are one of the most important things in the game. If not the most important. 715 Homers, 755, 3000 Hits and so on.

I never really realized that the most important thing to me was Passion, Character, Leadership.

Did Jeter have a horrible series? Yes. But I remember him making that awesome play when Rivera was in to stop the bleeding in the 8th. That was Passion. He could have given up, his bat was not doing anything. He still charged that ball, made a hell of a throw, giving them a chance at a last inning comeback. Passion.

I always remember the play when he charged and tossed it home for the out, or the time he crashed into the seats for the out. Clutch hits, steals, ect....hes all passion I think.

A-Rod also. did nothing in the first 2 games. Got 4 hits in the next 2. Homerun finally! To bad noone was on for that! As a Top professional, he still played hard.

I think the Yanks had one hell of a run during the regular season. they were way out of it very early. They fought through and made the playoffs. Maybe they just ran out of gas. I dont know. These guys are true professionals, leaders, athletes. They played with Passion even though they were down and out. The Indians were just better this time. 2-19 game winners for them. Awesome bullpen. Props to them.

Bottom line. Jeter is Class, Class, Class. A true leader, and the Captain. A true Yankee. Makes them proud.

A-Rod really did get them there. He won a whole lot of games himself. A true Professional.

I am a Giants fan. Suffering is out motto. Bonds is our team, or was our team.

Please put up replies about this post. Its not meant in anyway to debate clutch hitting, fielding, ect...

Just wondering what others see in these games.
Man I miss the 80's!!!

Jeter and Arod are both great ballplayers. I dont consider either of them anything else, but at the end of the day I HATE the Yankees and Love the Sox.

  • Passion, character and integrity + talent and committment are what 90% of ballplayers are made of.

I don't think anyone claimed that the folks playing didnt give 100%.

Regarding the Yankees, their is a lot of hatred/ rivalry built up against them, always has, always will, esp. from the die hard sox fans.

I was very impressed that the Yanks came back from being so far down, almost written off early in the year and played like fiends.
They just don't have enough this year and their pitchers are old/ or inexperienced. Next year they need to tweak that team and start fresh.
  • Hi TheThrill, welcome to the boards. You mentioned you're new here, so I should warn you that while almost all posters here feel the same way you do, there is a very tiny, very loud person or persons who like to disagree just to disagree. I won't mention names, you'll figure it out soon enough. Bottom line is, this is a great place to hang out online with knowledgeable passionate people who care about the sport & hobby, once again welcome!
  • Stats are the most important and the most important stat is how much a team wins. Of course each win is a combination of contributions from the nine starters, the five man rotation, the bench and the bullpen. To better understand the contributions of each player, number of homeruns, hits, walks, strikeouts and such give a much better hint than anything else. I know plenty of passionate, classy leaders who have absolutely zero baseball talent

I don't always feel comfortable judging a persons character or professionalism. I do feel very comfortable judging how much a baseball player helps his team win, so that's what I do

If there is a player who plays without passion, doesn't play hard and gives up often, yet still helps there team win. They deserve credit too

  • Thanks for the feedback.

It just seems that almost all replies are about the numbers.

I just like hearing stuff from people like perkdog, a REDSOX fan. Or baseball, Yankee fan.

Having a Passionate response is what makes the game great to me.

Stat or number wars are a never ending argument.
