This is interesting. Other than the "usual suspects" (BOS and NYY):

    << <i> MLB TEAM PAYROLL (US$)

    5. LA Angels 109,251,333
    8. Chicago Cubs 99,936,999
    14. Philadelphia 89,368,213
    23. Cleveland 61,289,667
    25. Colorado 54,424,000
    26. Arizona 52,067,546 >>

Seems like no correlation other than that mid-payroll teams (except the Phillies) need not apply for the post season.

Money can buy a winning team IF it is well-built and avoids injuries. It's harder to buy a World Series since almost anything can happen in a short series.
  • This year, yes.

But over the course of the last 10 years, playoff teams have come overwhelmingly from the top 10 payroll teams.

That team salary is incorrect -

It doesn't add the $28 million dollars given to Roger Clemens for his "pitching" this season. I was just listening to Mike & The Mad Dog, and they referred to Clemens as a "hood ornament" for this years Yankee team. Good way to put it.

  • Don't forget 21 million of that Yankees payroll is still being paid by the Rangers. Add that back to their payroll this year and they might get up there in the top 10 payrolls again. A-rod needs to become a free agent.

I think the Angels are clearing out a locker for him right about now. No way he doesn't opt-out, and I'd bet Anaheim is his next stop.

  • When the average AL payroll is 20 million more than the average NL payroll, yet the both send the same number of teams to the postseason it does skew the results a little. The cheapest and most expensive division both sent two teams to the playoffs. There are an aweful lot of examples of teams spending up to the level of its competition: Boston/New York, Angels/Seattle, San Diego/Arizona/Colorado. When those teams spend money so equally, correlations are more difficult to see even if they exist. Compare dollars spent and wins over the past decade. Every year a suprise jumps out, but over enough years, the top does begin to sperate itself. The two teams that stand out are the A's and Twins. And they are having a tough time keeping up that pace. Interestingly when Arizona won the World Series its payroll was in the top eight. The only other time in Rockies history that they made the playoffs their payroll was ninth. . .

  • 2 things:

    1.
These are bargain basement prices for solid players.
    16. Robinson Cano 490,800
    17. Chien-Ming Wang 489,500
    18. Melky Cabrera 432,400

#2 Look at these teams: hmmm. good, young teams largely developed from strong farm systems. Very very impressive given how much money is thrown at over-priced free agents. Who needs A-fraud?

    25. Colorado 54,424,000

Where's Clemens? He made a few bucks in there. Quit a few for 12 starts!!!

    Man I miss the 80's!!!

    28 Mike Rouse $380,100

Sabathia is signed through 2008, and he'll make $15mill or more per year when he either renegotiates or becomes a free agent. Westbrook will be making 11 million a year next year. Sizemore's contract will be going up (and significantly) over each of the next four years.

The Indians are a great story, with tons of young talent. But to think they'll remain in the bottom third of team salaries for any length of time? That's not going to happen.
