Home U.S. Coin Forum

What a weird telephone call I just got.

So, we are sitting here at the office getting ready for the Silver Dollar Coin Show, and someone from Presidential candidate Ron Paul's campaign office calls up and wants to set up a table at the show. Why? I have no idea, but my sister, not even knowing who Ron Paul is, sells them a table. Personally, I don't want politics involved in our show, period. After all, one of the points of this hobby is escaping the real world for a while. So, we are going to call his office back and tell them they can't set up.

What do you all think. Did we make the right decision?

yes. i don't want to have political candidates or organizations setting up at coin shows or other events. they'd be completely out of place and an intrusion.

if they wanted to set up outside the hall, you probably couldn't prevent them from doing that.

Something to remember about Mr. Paul: Hates the Federal Reserve system and has some kind of relationship with the Liberty Dollar guys. I also am led to believe is he is a 'closet' numismatist. (I have a collection but I do not really want people to know). The Liberty Dollar guys were selling Ron Paul medals to help finance his campaign.

    Thanks, Bob

  • I might let them sell the medals, but I don't think I would let them hand out literature.

His campaign is coin related so it seems to follow that he'd be interested in the show and guests might be interested in him.

You're not in a lot of danger but if he wins the office this decision will look like one of the most monumental blunders ever.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it in either case though.

i see nothing wrong with it. give it a chance.
    money is money.

call them up and ask what they plan to do would be the obvious choice
    on what to do next.

If you didn't assign a table, give him one way in the back and put him between the greasiest slimeball and some oldtimer you have keep waking up.

I hate when the stamps, sportscards, autographs, or poker chip guys get bourse space. Could probably make a joke about who's worse, a coin dealer or a politician, but I hate to generalize.

Of course you should let them set up. Most coin dealers hate the IRS (and so does everyone else). Ron Paul will get rid of the IRS.

He will also make it easier to carry concealed handguns across state lines to coin shows.

He will end the federal reserve.

He will set up a gold and silver currency system.

Anyone who cares about their personal freedoms should be interested in Ron Paul.

It shows that his campaign is working hard.

Also, was the call from Ron Paul's campaign office, or was it from one of the many grassroots groups that support him?

Aside from the fact that he doesn't have a snowball's chance, there's a little thing called Congress that would get in the way of him doing any of that.

#2 and #3 are within the realm of possibility especially if lots of encumbents lost their
bids for reelection. There would be a new and somewhat change minded Congress if
    Paul won.

Unless he's planning to display and sell only numismatic material and not display any political materials at his table then he and his campaign should not be sold a bourse table. His group should be physically removed from the bourse floor if any political items or slogans are displayed.

There is a checks and balances system involving the branches of the U.S. government. He does not have a chance in hell of accomplishing any of his proposals, particularly those involving the IRS and the Federal Reserve System.

By the way, the "Ron Paul rEVOLution" slogan is a plagarized slogan.

Probably the same two that were right inside the door at ANA, just off center to the right, and up front.

sorry I was sitting with my back to my pc and had it backwards.

the two were to the left inside the door.

That is all fine and good, but our decision wasn't about a political view point of his. I just don't think a coin show is an appropriate campaign forum (outlet).

  • << <i>Also, was the call from Ron Paul's campaign office, or was it from one of the many grassroots groups that support him? >>

It was from their Missouri office, from what I understand. The call was from somewhere in Springfield, in southwest Missouri.

For those that think I should have let them set up, please understand that I want attendees of the show to have "coins" on their mind. We advertise this event as a coin show, and that is really all that it should be.
  • Since he's never seen on CSPAN speaking in congress, he's got to be somewhere doing something. Send him to the nearest flea market, that would be more fitting for a politician.

No politics at coin shows... distracts from the venue. Of course, if you have an 'open forum bourse', all that changes. image Cheers, RickO

His presence may bring a lot of walk-ins into the show. This exposure to the general public and whatever media follows him there, could be a positive, in promoting our hobby.

It's a coin show. I would rent tables to people engaged in buying and selling coins (and related items).

If you rent a table to anyone who asks, be prepared for all sorts of kooks looking for a soapbox.

I think that Scotsman made the right decision. Of course my opinion is slightly biased since they rejected my request to set-up a lemonade stand on the bourse last year.

You could tell him that there is a $10,000 extra fee on tables rented to politicians.

I understand that he used to be.
