What a weird telephone call I just got.

So, we are sitting here at the office getting ready for the Silver Dollar Coin Show, and someone from Presidential candidate Ron Paul's campaign office calls up and wants to set up a table at the show. Why? I have no idea, but my sister, not even knowing who Ron Paul is, sells them a table. Personally, I don't want politics involved in our show, period. After all, one of the points of this hobby is escaping the real world for a while. So, we are going to call his office back and tell them they can't set up.
What do you all think. Did we make the right decision?

I don't know, maybe he wants to sell some silver dollars.

He's trying to get the five and dime vote.
if they wanted to set up outside the hall, you probably couldn't prevent them from doing that.
60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!

Something to remember about Mr. Paul: Hates the Federal Reserve system and has some kind of relationship with the Liberty Dollar guys. I also am led to believe is he is a 'closet' numismatist. (I have a collection but I do not really want people to know). The Liberty Dollar guys were selling Ron Paul medals to help finance his campaign.
Thanks, Bob
You're not in a lot of danger but if he wins the office this decision will look like one of the most monumental blunders ever.
I wouldn't lose any sleep over it in either case though.

????
money is money.
call them up and ask what they plan to do would be the obvious choice
on what to do next.
I hate when the stamps, sportscards, autographs, or poker chip guys get bourse space. Could probably make a joke about who's worse, a coin dealer or a politician, but I hate to generalize.

He will also make it easier to carry concealed handguns across state lines to coin shows.
He will end the federal reserve.
He will set up a gold and silver currency system.
Anyone who cares about their personal freedoms should be interested in Ron Paul.
<< <i>Of course you should let them set up. Most coin dealers hate the IRS (and so does everyone else). Ron Paul will get rid of the IRS.

Aside from the fact that he doesn't have a snowball's chance, there's a little thing called Congress that would get in the way of him doing any of that.

#2 and #3 are within the realm of possibility especially if lots of encumbents lost their
bids for reelection. There would be a new and somewhat change minded Congress if
Paul won.

There is a checks and balances system involving the branches of the U.S. government. He does not have a chance in hell of accomplishing any of his proposals, particularly those involving the IRS and the Federal Reserve System.
By the way, the "Ron Paul rEVOLution" slogan is a plagarized slogan.

That is all fine and good, but our decision wasn't about a political view point of his. I just don't think a coin show is an appropriate campaign forum (outlet).
<< <i>Also, was the call from Ron Paul's campaign office, or was it from one of the many grassroots groups that support him? >>
It was from their Missouri office, from what I understand. The call was from somewhere in Springfield, in southwest Missouri.
For those that think I should have let them set up, please understand that I want attendees of the show to have "coins" on their mind. We advertise this event as a coin show, and that is really all that it should be.
If you rent a table to anyone who asks, be prepared for all sorts of kooks looking for a soapbox.
Hey, before ya shoot him down - keep in mind he might be the only table working the last day!

That is the right decision unless they plan to sell coins.

I think that Scotsman made the right decision. Of course my opinion is slightly biased since they rejected my request to set-up a lemonade stand on the bourse last year.
You could tell him that there is a $10,000 extra fee on tables rented to politicians.
I understand that he used to be.
Richard Maybury's newsletter "Early Warning Report" still lists him as a coin dealer.
