    Laurent, I do not know for certain, but I would guess that it was placed between sheets of cotton batting and kept inside a metal box. Maybe someone put together an entire birth year set of denominations, and made the makeshift storage using the cotton/box idea. And then, it laid undisturbed for at least 100 years waiting for this poor church mus to come along. image

    Anyway, I was instantly smitten when I first saw it.
