I've seen that too. I've got to believe that the Unc's are few and far between, with most of the orders filled with the 'Fine' specimens.

I don't care for the National Collectors Mint. Seems like they try to market a lot of tokens/medallions as 'coins'. It can be very deceiving for someone who isn't very knowlegable.

Never, ever do this... unless you can see them in hand, or they have an ironclad return policy - shipping included. Cheers, RickO

Why not just find a local coin show or dealer? Last show I was at, a dealer had a bin full of dollars for $14 each, there were some AU 1921 Morgans and 22,23,24 Peace dollars in there. Also spotted a lightly toned/dirty 1889 that was a strong AU58 or so. I had to resist not picking up a couple- have enough common date stuff already. I imagine most of the coins from TV ad are going to be VF and below common dates.

    Rule #1 when buying coins:

Step away from the television set. FAR away.

Right here on the Buy/Sell/Trade Coins forum, you can do much better.

  • I've never seen a good deal or even decent deal for coins on television. I see people all the time trying to sell coins purchased from television and feel sorry for them when they find out that the rare coins they purchased are worth slightly over melt. If you are just looking to pick up a few nice common date dollars you really can't beat a local coin show or the BST board here. I also like going to flea markets, you just never know what you'll find there. Most of the coins from this type offer will be shined up xf/au coins if you're lucky.

Generally speaking, flea market coins also tend to be shined up and overpriced, unless you're lucky enough to find a good seller.

The BST forum here is one of the nicest features of this site.

Being a coin guy first and foremost, I tend to forget sometimes that not all TH-ers are coin people, not even on this site.

It was coins that got me into detecting, but for a lot of folks, I guess it's the other way around.

I remember going out with my North Carolina detecting mentor once, to an old church that had been built around 1800 (ancient, by western NC standards).

He came rushing around from the other side of the building, and asked me, "Hey, Rob, did the US make two-cent pieces?"

Ha ha, very funny, I thought. He's trying to trick me into believing he's dug a two-cent piece.

Then I realized he wasn't a coin collector, and that he really didn't know enough to be hoaxing me. Which meant...

Yep! He'd dug an 1869 two-cent piece. Helluva nice one, too.

  • my wife's parents have bought coins from those type of shows. they looked really bad when i saw them. i felt bad that they bought them , especially since i was a coin guy.
try going to a coin show. you'll learn alot there. i collect seated half dimes and german marks. i like to be able to see and hold the coin before i buy it..

Aren't you glad you asked your "stupid question"?

The stupid thing to do would be not to ask.
