Home U.S. Coin Forum

Ebay has accomplished little with it's new rules.

Centsles and others of his ilk are still selling grossly misrepresented grades on coins in garbage holders.
He is abiding completely with the new rules and conditions and from what I can see he is not suffering any loss of willing suckers bidding on his crap.
The only detectable difference in his listings is the words choice and gem instead of ms 63 and 65.
The junk slab is still nicely photographed and prominently displays the phoney grade.
He is also still able to describe the numerical grade in his description.
Sadly, plenty of newbies and worse still, many forum members who stubornly believe they can guess the grade from a juiced up photo will keep this character and others like him in a profit making position for some time to come.
Meanwhile, legitimate sellers will be stuck with an extra expense of providing a picture of the reverse slab.
He has to be LOL. Dave W

  • A fool and his money are quickly parted is especially true in coin collecting. Nobody, not even ebay can protect a fool from himself.

I trust no one really believed that the con artists would NOT find ways around the rules.... that is truly naive. Too bad for the individuals buying without the knowledge to properly assess the product... however, it is called 'the school of hard knocks'. We have all attended at one time or another. Every effort serves to make the market a little cleaner, but also forces the crooks to get a tad more wily. Cheers, RickO

Ebay is making progress. But they aren't law enforcement and don't carry a gun. New laws get immediate results. Ebay will take much longer. But they have stated that they are in it for the long haul and will address this issue. No, it won't be perfect but this is a step in the right direction. --jerry

The only thing these new rules have done is to make those of us selling real coins (as opposed to self-slabbers) do more work...

I agree with not wilight there. They have made some strides, they will get feedback that it didn't go far enough. Their business isn't coins after all, it's providing a venue so you all can sell coins.

We'll I haven't listed a new certified coin since 9/16 the day before their first line in the sand. I will probably return at some point but with the extra work on the pictures and listing format it likely just be for a small group of coins that have been in inventory for awhile. I'll move the fresh stuff sell through the website, CW and NN ads and shows.

YOu make a valid point here, they are a venue. I'm not sure why they are trying to protect the coin section but any other section can provide whatever crap they want. I am perfectly happy with ebay being a venue to exchange items/money. They are not responsible for protecting me. If they were, maybe they should protect how much anyone pays for anything. It's like going to a flea market and asking the event manager to check all items at the flea market to be sure they are authentic and worthy of spending money on.
  • Not that I condone the mis-representation of any item on eBay, whether it be a coin or webkinz trading cards. I just don't see this "crime" as the most egregious on eBay for coins. I'm not expecting a big impact from the policy change.

I certainly understand the TPGs interest in the eBay policy, self slabbing directly challenges their business model and dilutes the "branding"

Better enforcement and penalizing the policies already in place about fakes and deliberately altered coins that would help me. I'd like to see a 150% penalty for fakes/altered coins after the 1st or 2nd offense, increasing the penalty for repeat offenders.

The action is in response to Coins and Louis Viutton handbags being the largest categories with counterfeit and items not as described.

The only thing it accomplishes is eliminating these auctions from the search results for people who search for coins by using the grading service and/or the grade in the inquiry. For instance "pcgs pr69DCAM," or "69DCAM" Obviously if they check the box that searches the body of the auction as well, it is of no use.

But there are real problems in the coin section. What happens if some AP reporter decides to run with a story "Ebay coin sales hurt by chinese counterfeits" that goes on to cite expert opinions that 95% of trade dollars on Ebay are fake or something like that? There are some really shady things going on if someone takes the time to look into it...
