Home Metal Detecting

Finally Put the Coil to the Soil Again

I went home to visit my family for a couple of days and decided to bring the detector with me. All the sites I usually detect up there have been hammered numerous times by my family, but I haven't been out since mid-August and I would have detected anywhere.

Yesterday I detected my grandma's yard not expecting much and not finding much. In the past I have found two silver Roosies there, so there's always a chance. This afternoon my uncle and I detected a local community center that was the site of a school which was torn down in the early 1960s. The community center is actually the old school's lunchroom and now family reunions, horse shows and yard sales are held on the property. This site has been detected many times over the years and has always produced pretty well, whether it is clad from the yard sales or the occasional silver coin or Wheatie.

I usually end up deteting a little on all areas of the property and today was no exception. I had no real plan of action and the good finds were few and far between as always. After about an hour and a half I had two memorial cents and my uncle had a clad dime. I just decided to hit the area where yard sales are held to salvage some more clad and call it a day. This area is very trashy and it's becoming harder and harder to find much of anything these days. After about 15 minutes here, I got a decent sounding dime signal that was a little erratic. I decided to dig anyway, which is no easy task since we haven't seen a hint of rain in three weeks. The signal was coming from 5-6 inches and once I got down pretty far, I started hearing a crunching noise. I just knew I had hit a rusty can, but I pushed on anyway. The crunching ended up being coal, so when I got to my desired depth I scanned the hole...and nothing. I scanned the pile of dirt and got a strong dime signal. Since this came from at least 5 inches, I knew it had to be good. After moving some dirt, I found this lying there:

Boy was I surprised! It's my 8th Mercury dime and 21st silver coin overall. It just goes to show you that no site is ever completely hunted out. Sorry there's no pics of the site or the coin coming from the ground, but whenever I bring my camera it seems to jinx me.

I lust for silver.
