coinfacts shows an 1858S with a similair sized mint mark as the coin above. so i guess the answer to my question is yes, the size changed that year. neat.

the coin is not worth 1200 to me and i collect half eagles.
i have seen 1858S half eagles that look a ton better then that
for less money.
that coin is net 45 details, polished. where is the luster? ooh yea, gone.
the coin should be priced around 500 and would have sold for about that
in a net anacs slab.
what do you like about that coin? sorta common too for S.
thoughts? it will be back on ebay in a month when the buyer gets
a real look at it.

He's the one who bought this coin for $1200 ... He wasn't the seller... he was the top bidder
what was he/she/it thinking???
i have seen that seller step up for some amazing coins before
but never anything that looked as bad as that.
