My first real find and I need your help

Today looking around an old foundation I found 6" deep a medal of some kind (waiting for pics to get emailed to me, then I'll post). The top clasp still has some of the ribbon or fabric. The bottom has a stone in the center of a metallic twine that holds the stone. The stone itself is black and inscribed into it is a face wearing a helmet. Any ideas before the pic? Thank you.
