I'm not surprised it's hard to see on a 2-D image, with sub-optimum lighting. This is often the case with die varieties that are either worn or ground away nearly to oblivion. You really must have the coin in hand, and move it around to just the right angle in just the right lighting before it becomes obvious. I see "something" there, but without an overlay it's impossible to prove that it's actually a latent VDB. Rick, have you tried creating an overlay based on a clear VDB variety? This may show that the size and position are consistent (or not) with the remnants showing up on this coin.

Are we looking at the power of insinuated delusion. Like the thousands who gather to see a holy image on a wall. This is not numismatics. It is a 101 study in paranoid schizophrenia. Did anyone hear laughter while veiwing these photos?
I don't see it. It's kinda like one of those "magic illusion" posters, or whatever they call 'em. Everybody else can see the images in 'em, but not me.

<< <i>They do exist and an experienced eye will easily see it on Rick's coin. I see it on the coin at the beginning of the post as well. >>
Oh and how many of these have you cherry picked with your experienced eyes? I'd love to see photos of them. Coppercoins could not tell by the photos either, so I guess he lacks experienced eyes too.
The reverse master die was changed in August 1909 in an attempt to reduce the relief. Some of the 1909 no VDB coins come from the older master die, and most come from the new flatter die. Look in Renaissance of American Coinage 1909-1915 for complete copies of the relevant correspondence.

This coin might potentially be on, fro the image...... It might be wishful thinking, but there is (at least to me, from the image) the appearance of the base of the VDN barely visible....... At the least, there is something going on in that area...

<< <i>Here's a pick from DLRC of a 1909 s VDB.
It has the usual 1909 reverse die characteristics and you can tell the difference with or without the VDB.

The VDB is very clear here!
