Wyoming Quarter

I just got some Wyoming quarters from the bank today, and in my opinion, the design (no intentional offense to anyone from Wyoming) is awful. There's literally no detail to it, and all the quarters in the roll that I opened look like they got kicked around on the floor for a while before they left the Mint. It's probably the worst design in the entire series. Does anyone else have an opinion about this coin?

I agree with you. I don't know if it's the worst one, because they are all pretty awful. Indiana for example, now there's a real pile o crap!

    PURPLE!
  • If anyone has a proof set for this year, I believe that there is no
detail in the proof version , primarily an outline .
Also, the uncs I have seen have a 'shaved' look in the fields

  • As a Wyoming native I have my head stuck in the ground I'm so ashamed of our Quarter, dang so much could have been done.

I agree. At least put a little effort and detail in the subject matter.
  • On the examples that I purchased the outline of the rider and the horse is almost level with the rest of the coin.

I'm surprised this "proposed design" didn't make the cut:

What everyone fails to understand is, there is no detail because that is the design. Never had any detail, never will. That image is all over Wyoming, the signs, the license plates, everywhere. There is no other image that is Wyoming like that one. It is instant recognition.

I think it ties Michigan's - an outline of the Great Lakes - winner!
  • Being a big fan of the state quarter program. This design is
the worst of the series so far.

Worst coin design thus far by a long shot!! What were they thinking.....couldn't they at least put some mountains in the background?

Once again, the good Mr. Carr has provided a superior design.

They could've at least put the Grand Tetons on it as a background for the horse and rider, along with Old Faithful!!! imageimage

    I kind of like it.

It's simple and it does scream Wyoming. No one would consider it inspired, perhaps, but it serves the purpose without being trite like the Indiana design or some of the others.

It's not unusual for almost an entire issue to be poorly made, poorly handled, or both.

You know what I think it is that bothers me so much about the Wyoming quarter design? The outline with no detail makes it look automatically like a coin that collectors would grade in Good condition, and who wants a coin that looks worn when it's brand new?
  • While I am not ashamed of the design(Wyoming Native and STILL here)I am disappointed in the quality of the strike. I sent the best I could find out of two bags of 1000 each and nothing graded better than 66(PCGS)which is about where I thought they would be. If higher grades are out there and I am sure they are, they will carry a premium.

Wyoming has a rich history. For those who chose to inform themselves more, check this out:

By the way, I have never posted to this forum before(been here a couple of years)but have enjoyed tremendously and learned a great deal from the posts of all regulars.

I hope someone finds that Wyoming MS70!

You raise an interesting point... what will the coins look like when they are actually worn, and the faint outline of the horse and rider are pretty much worn away?

Hey! All 100 people in Wyoming voted on that one!

Perhaps a horse and rider with some detail would have added a bit of class to the design!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • The residents of Wyoming were represented by a committee of thirteen individuals in turn, who voted on the designs. Five designs were submitted to the mint. The mint artists then sent back their interpretation of the designs, two were elimintated by the committee, then the final vote taken.

The very open simplicity speaks for itself as well as for and of the 515,004 people who do indeed reside here.

the first wyoming I saw in circ I got REALLY excited... I thought I had an error where all the details was obscured by some tremendous error....
alas, the coin itself is that bad... IMHO.
