Anyone else have this problem?

I live in western wisconsin (La Crosse), there are only two coin dealers within 50 miles and they're both crooks in my opinion, it always amazes me when your buying, break out a retail magazine, when your selling to them 20% or more behind greysheet ask. Is this normal around the country? Even for 90% how can you sell comman junk silver dollars at 19.00 a shot and sleep at night. Any slab you bring in is automatically misgraded, any raw coin "they have many in the back and they all have problems" (Never mind I bought some from him a few years ago) So other than ebay what other choice do you have? Sorry just venting, I love this hobby, I'm getting more educated on it by reading this board but come on!!!!! Not slamming all dealers here, just wish there were a few honest ones where I live.

Same, not fun and then they say I have to wholesale it to a dealer that's crap.

What makes it worse they dont like each other also......coin club is gone, no shows in this area at all.
  • Try the BST board here instead of getting raped by a lousy dealer.

So do we all. There are some decent ones near where I live, but it's still usually at least a 45 minute drive to one, and I'm in the Chicago burbs. As a result, I do my buying online and at shows. I guess if you're up for a trip to Wisconsin Rapids, there's a dealer from there that was set up at the ANA show that was decent.

I miss the days of having a choice between many shops, when I was in Spokane, WA there were 8 of them. Imagine Chicago has a "few"

You have it tough, I can drive 1hr and get to a shop and most of the time they are close.Thank god for E-bay at least we can look at coins. Just the time it takes for a item to come up and track it just to miss it be cuse the wife wants to go to Dinner. I can live off a cup a-noodle and a coke. image

  • Three or four honest dealers near me however most are on the high end of retail. One dealer won't accept offers either. However this same dealer has what I consider an amazing inventory. I'm talking bust coins into the 20,000-30,000 range, numerous proof seated coins, almost a complete set of proof indian head cents in ms64-65 pcgs old holders, proof buffalo nickels, etc. The last time I was in the shop he had 8 1893-S morgans ranging from VF to AU. (Funny but when you see that many together it kinda takes away the rarity excitement) I just like to wander around looking. The other dealers have a very thin inventory. I still do most shopping online.
  • It shows why ebay and honest dealers with a good online presence are successful.

B&M's.. for the most part (certainly not all), are driving themselves out of business.... I have watched a couple and do not see how they stay in business. Cheers, RickO

Generally I abhor going into a coin shop for the reasons you describe. Most of us feel a coin shop is a place you can not wait to get to, and then after a few minuets, you can not wait to get out of. I applaud the good ones, Keep up the CUSTOMER SERVICE no matter how weird and winy we collectors are.

B&M's have to make money to stay in business

They have overhead costs to pay "real estate taxes"

We all know that in Wisconsin taxes are not resonableimage

I am not defending them, it is just a fact of life

Musky.. what you cited is all true... and IMO all the more reason to provide good customer service. Word of mouth in the collector circle and repeat business is the foundation of the B&M enterprise. If they do not provide it.. buh-bye. Cheers, RickO
