Break Into NGC or PCGS Holder

I won a 1970d on ebay and the seller was good enough to inform me he does not have one available in store or that he could find suitable to send me (very nice man). So he is either going to send me one of his in either a PCGS or his NGC holder. I started a Dansco book with my son and never tried to break into one of these nor do I really want to. However I dont have the funds availabe to buy another one. A very, very nice member from this board got us started with both raw and graded coins. I will not mention his name (ok you dragged it out of me TAclough) as he may want to fly under the radar. Anyway are they tough to break out of the holder? If so I just may sell it or pass it on to another you collector and get one later down the road. My son is learning the meaning of earning and sharing with others alsong with grading and collecting at the same time. I give alot of credit to a member of this board and I hope he does not mind mentioning his name. A person of this kind so go noticed as you dont find this type of person in the neighborhood every day. Right TAClough? Anyway please advise on the holder.

Your first sentence stopped me... "I won a 1970d on ebay and the seller was good enough to inform me he does not have one available in store or that he could find suitable to send me.... " How could he put a coin up for auction that he does not have??? Cheers, RickO

He says after he took a closer look???????? He was selling a lot of them and I guess he ran low. I would rather him be honest then to send me his last banged up Kennedy and have probelms after that. Heck even my son would know the difference and I am trying to protect him of bad sellers. I dont even want him to know they exist. Been lucky so far but I know they are out there.

Cracking a coin out of a slab is not difficult. When other members chime in you will be presented with multiple methods.

Personally, I prefer to simply place the slab (on edge, holding slab front and back between thumb & forefinger & squeezing lightly) on the concrete garage floor, and give it a couple of moderate strikes with a hammer, then rotate the slab to the other edges as needed until the shell halves are separated. Start with light blows to get the feel of it, and be sure to wear eye protection and/or cover the slab with a towel or other cloth.

Squeezing the slab edges (gently) in a vise until the seams crack also works well (protect your eyes) but I prefer the hammer method....it's done in just a few seconds image Good Luck. -Preussen
