How Do You Break A Coin Out Of A NGC Slab?

Can anyone please tell me how I can beak out a coin from a NGC holder without messing up the coin? Thanks.

Sincerely,
Chris

  • Place the slab horizontally in a vice and slowly apply pressure. The slab will crack around the seam and you can take the top off and remove the coin. Many people cut or hit the slab with a hammer, but the vice is the quickest and safest way.

  • Chris,

NGC is easy to break out with a small hammer. Lay the slab on a hard surface and gently tap the sides all the way around. The seal cracks easily and you can pull the two sides apart. Takes about 30 seconds start to finish.

  • The new NGC holders are worse than anything else I have ever tried to crack. They are using a new plastic. You have to leave them in the freezer overnight. AS crazy as that sounds, it works.

And here I thought I had turned into a Pansy when I cracked the last NGC slab 10 minutes after it was received.(DID NOT LIKE GRADE GIVEN) Plastic was real pliable, not brittle like older slabs. Senseless to pay good money for slabs that you have to work at to break.

SEGS plastic is also really tough and flexible. They have great capsules, even if their grading rep ain't so hot. Hmmm... I like the freezer idea. Why didn't I think of that? Probably because it involves patience, which is not my strong suit.

  • Pitchforks and gasoline.
    We'll leave it at that.
  • high heat blow torch, gives the coin some nice toning....hammer and vice do work well....if you dont have the torch.....and aren`t looking for the additional toning....image

OK, let's see, how to crack a slab...

First you will need a ball pin hammer, a chizel, a vehicle (Anything over 2 tons will do), a 1/4 block of C4, an open field, a 55 gallon drum, and finally a fire retardent and bolistic full body suit.

Let me know if you can not put together the system using these materials.

  • Mr. Paseo,

I have everything except for the block of C4. Do you know where I can pick one up?image
Seriously, I want to thank everyone who responded.

I use metal snips to do the job. Very efficient, even with Segs holders.

  • True: someone I know was so upset by the grade given that he SHOT a 22 caliber through the slab. Apparently the slab was opened quite easily after the impact.

  • Ty, what was the coin in question and what grades was received/expected if you know the details of that? What was the net grade after impact? image

  • I would suggest not trying TY's idea. The bullet may hit the coin. image
  • It was not my idea.

I saw the slab (or its remains, RIP). The only thing I know about the coin is that it was a Morgan Dollar and that he paid more than US$2,000.

    BigD5,

Wow, I could not get the metal snips to work with the SEGS slab.
They just wouldn't catch and the slab kept slipping out.
    (I gotta get a vise)

I ended up using my Dremmel image
