....and they are currently sitting in my SDB.

Time to bring 'em home for the weekend for a little party. image

I wasn't sure why I bought so many of them at the time....and I still don't know why.

However, I've been watching the steady increase in value on eBay, and I am quite pleased at what I've been seeing.

I believe the mintage is a "Low" 17,000.

Anyone else holding some of these beauties?????

Latest auction on eBay.

I just sold a 69 for BO $330, but I've got 2 left. BTW when I sold mine, it was the only PCGS MS up for auction. Now there are 3... I may hold on to my remaining 2 until later in the year or next year... Mintage of 17k is not low compared to other MS $5 Commem. mintages...

  • I personally like them, proof or unc.
  • I have 2 proofs, wish I would have bought a mint. I like the coin very much as well.

A nice article by Erik Martin discussing this coin appeared in the September 2007 Coin Values. As Erik pointed out, it has some good things going for it: the uncirculated mintage was only 16,149, and this is only modern half-eagle with a San Francisco mint mark. John Reich's classic eagle reverse looks great in both uncirculated and proof versions, and the obverse is growing on me. To quote the article, "If history is any guide, the Uncirculated version of the 2006-S San Francisco Old Mint gold $5 half eagle should at least double in value." I noticed a few mint-packaged coins go for below the $245 issue price on eBay in late Spring, while they have reached and exceeded $300 in the intervening months.

    Should be fun to watch!
