  • I really like the one on the top right from the Comission of Fine Arts. I assume it's the Emancipation Proclamation?

They all look good, but wait till the mint gets ahold of them.

  • I agree, as designs in black and white they look pretty good, but it's hard to imagine how that level of detail and shading will be discernible on actual coins.

How about a 2009 VDB MPL near exact as 1909?

Something in a nice plastic would be in keeping with the rest of their production....

By the time the committee gets done with them.. they will be the equivalent of the SHQ program... A committe does NOT do art... Cheers, RickO

how about giving lincoln a break and put a sinking ship that
represents the falling ethics and lack of brain power in congress.

Ya know, these design are great and I'm sure they took a long time. But, I don't care for them. They're too busy, too much going on. I like a simple change, but that's just me.

    Thanks for listening.

    Some cool designs.

fudge.... I was hoping they'd revisit the wheatie rev.....
  • I dislike every single one of these designs...there is no WOW factor and seemingly, a lack of passion for the work.

Bring back the wheat ear design, along with the VDB and do a limited number of these at the SF mint (actually, the exact mintage of the original would be apropo in my opinion).

A limited run on Matte Proofs would also be very nice.

These are not as unacceptable as I thought they would be. I am cautiously optimistic.

I heard on the news today that all of the designs were rejected. I forgot the name of the group but it was something like Citizens Coin Committee.

I like the one showing the capital being built. The writing one is going to have everybody thinking it's the declaration of independence. The cabin is uninspired and the Lincoln in front of the capital is strange coming before the one showing the capital being built.

The first is the Illinois Statehouse.

Lincoln will have had the cent to himself for 100 years. Bring back Liberty.

And not just Lincoln. Historical figures have been on US coinage way too long. Liberty should be brought back.

Many Congressmen may be satisfied that she's back, on the back of the Prexy bux. Who knows, the statue may replace more homes, monuments and eagles on coin reverses while keeping our historic leaders on the obverses.

Zoins, you're scaring me. I don't really like the statue of liberty on coins. I prefer other forms of representation.

I'm just the messenger. When the Prexy Bux came out, there was a press release that said Lady Liberty returned on the reverse as the Statue of Liberty. I believe this was from the US Mint. As for who should scare you, you may want to consider Congressman Michael Castle, probably the most influential person in modern numismatics. Before the Prexy Bux and the Sac, he was pushing for this design by US Mint engraver James Ferrell, engraved by Ron Landis below:

The large lobbying efforts by Indian nations, mid-west Governors, Dead President home foundations and the like is one reason why I think it would be useful for the ANA to become active in DC again and represent views of the average collector. No matter what individuals do, I think their efforts need to be coordinated to counter the strong special interests (and political correctness) that surrounds present-day numismatics.

Was Teddy Roosevelt the only politician endowed with an artistic sensibility? What are these people thinking?
  • ZoinsZoins Posts: 34,398 ✭✭✭✭✭
Castle was thinking that people would find the Statue of Liberty easier to recognize than a new profile of Lady Liberty being proposed by Ron Landis at the time.

TR is the only President I've heard of that was actively involved in design of coinage.
  • sumnomsumnom Posts: 5,963 ✭✭✭
What did the profile look like?
  • ZoinsZoins Posts: 34,398 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Here's Ron's design:

    image

Ron's Lady Liberty essentially met the same fate as Frank Gasparro's decades earlier, to be passed over in favor of a historic, real woman. Frank's Lady Liberty is here:

Recent experience is the reason why I think the only hope a classic Lady Liberty has is for the ANA or some other organization to start representing collectors to Congress. There are just too many other special interests that Lady Liberty will never get the time of day. The exception is the APEs where they've been coming up with new allegorical designs.

I thought that this was one of the cents to be produced.
Someone posted on here, 6 months ago or so, exactly what Congress called for in cents for 2009. (I can't find the info in a search though)
The original S VDB design is scheduled to be made, I believe.

Edited to add....Here's the legislation.....Perhaps there is no VDB coming....

The Gallery Mint liberty head is quite nice. The Gasparro design turned me off the first time I saw it. I thought it was cartoonish but in comparison to the pres bucks it's quite nice. I am still hesitant though to look backward. The inspiration for both designs is obvious. Is there no way to have a good design without recycling old ones? The sac, both obverse and reverse, is brilliant. The obverse of the 2005 nickel is also an excellent design. Why can't we have that level of quality for the rest of our circulating coinage? I can't help but think that rapidly changin designs of the state quarters and the soon to be changing dollar reverses invite poor designs. They have to be conceived and produced quickly, how can there be time to really think through a design?

Awful --- why put this on a coin 3/4-inch in diameter?
