That's quite an interesting coin given that it is in such a high state of preservation, is mildly toned and PL and also appears to have bag-derived textile toning while retaining some geometric shapes remniscent of endroll toning. I have one Morgan in my theoretical box-of-twenty and I know the 1880-S MS68PL is worth far more than my coin, but I would have to see it in-hand to determine if I liked it better than mine.
By the way, that is in no way a slam toward who might own the coin or who might have imaged the coin.
That would SOOOOO be in my (Morgan) box of 20(-something). Gorgeous!

No, but that coin is very beautiful and, outside of the 'box of 20' concept, a keeper. I have been thinking about working on a box of 20, and my view of this is that each coin should have a neat story to tell. I collect Morgan dollars, and would prefer to put an MS66 1883CC DMPL example in a box of 20 because of the important role of Carson City in 19th-century silver mining and Morgan dollar production. Many collectors focus on the 13-piece CC subset of Morgan dollars for the same reason. Coins in a box of 20 shouldn't be there just because they are in superb + grades and therefore expensive. I have an AU58 1874S Trade dollar with 4 obverse chop marks that will also go into my box of 20.
Since I have no interest in Morgans, I would have to say no.

Thanks for the replies. It's not my coin; image was taken from Anaconda archives....so I don't know who the lucky owner is at this point. It certainly has a lot going for it. ....any PCGS 68PL Morgan is going to have to be nice, so the toning just makes it that much more special...if you like that sort of thing.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector. Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.
And, if I did collect Morgans or US federal type, I'd want the representative example for my box of 20 to be a key date - one that is genuinely rare and in demand, even if it meant I'd have to settle for one in worse condition than MS68PL.
Nice piece. How PL is it really BTW? I might not put such a coin in a box of 20, but possibly in my PL Morgan set, especially if it an unrepresented VAM in the set for the date.
Wow... if everyone has a box of 20 that this coin is not worthy of... I'm out of my league! I think it is a phenominal looking coin, and a valuable conditional rarity. You bet it would be in my top 20.

Whats the pop on that toner? Nice coin, common date, uncommon grade.
Not even a 69 DMPL?

It is an amazing coin, but it just doesn't give me that thrill of a top 20 coin in my book.
Would it be in my box of 20, in a heartbeat, but not for long!!!

I knew it would happen.
How can you say that without even seeing the reverse?? I don't care for it myself, so no way!

I to do not collect Morgans. Never liked them. Sorry, Morgan lovers.
