Grade needed for Barber 25c......

I just acquired this 1908-D Barber 25c.
Under 10X, there are very small contact marks on the face and fields, so I'm thinking the very best this can grade is an AU-58.

That is a gorgeous coin! It would be even more beautiful with an 'S' mint mark!

Seriously though... in AU to MS60 the PCGS price is $140 to $250 … market should be around $91 to $162.00 and with the eye appeal your coins has… I’m willing the be the value is over $100 easy.

But... are there just two contact marks or is there wear on the high points? It if looks AU in that blown up photo... ya know what, I'd send it in to get graded!

The statement above shows a misunderstanding about grading. Contact marks have nothing to do with the determination of whether a coin is circulated or uncirculated. An uncirculated coin may have substantial contact marks, for example bagmarks, roller marks, etc. If there is no wear on the coin's surfaces, particularly at the highest points on the design, and the mint luster (i.e. the as-struck metal surface finish) is intact, then the coin is uncirculated. The quantity of contact marks, along with other factors, will then determine whether the coin is graded MS60, MS62, MS63, etc.

Conversely an AU coin may have absolutely no visible "contact marks." The determination that the coin is AU, rather than uncirculated, hinges on the presence of wear on the high points, visible as areas within which the original mint luster is gone. This is usually evidenced by a dull grey finish that contrasts with the reflectivity of the surrounding unworn areas where the luster is intact. A coin which shows such wear cannot be graded "uncirculated" regardless of the amount of contact marks. An AU coin with minimal wear and minimal contact marks will likely grade AU58. Increasing wear and/or increasing numbers of contact marks are likely to lower the grade to AU55, AU53 or AU50.

I cannot grade the coin from the image, and in general I do not believe it is possible to grade coins accurately from images (as I have often stated on these Boards). But I hope the above discussion shows why the original poster's comments were slightly off-base.
