Telemarking ripp-off revealed 5 yrs later!

I had a guy come in yesterday with 8 Common date NGC-62 $5 libs. They were all low end and scudzy. He found them going through the rest of his fathers estate. Anyway, he wanted to know what these were worth and I basically quoted him what GSB was and that typical buying prices would be about 10-15% behind that, probably a bit less on these as the quality was low. Apparently, his father had paid 500.00 each for these thru some telemarketing firm 5 yrs ago. They still had the cancelled check for 4k. His expression was undescribable as he had assumed since they were $500 each in 2001, they were worth 2x that today .

I did not buy them!

All too common of a story!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I have a similar story. My Great Grandfather bought a 2005 set of Gold Eagles, 1/10 oz - 1oz. All holdered together in a multiholder NGC MS69. IIRC, he paid $2500. At the time, the set was worth maybe $1100. He said that the telemarketer was calling him at least once a day, sometimes twice in a day and felt pressured to buy the coins.

    Telemarketers are SCUM!

I have seen this all too often... and when you try to tell people, they actually get angry and defensive... they do not want to admit they have been conned..... too bad, I try to do it gently, but cannot lie to them. Cheers, RickO

Those scudzy NGC 62 $5's were probably worth $500 at one time.
Not today though. Doesn't really matter what they look like to some generic buyers as long as they are unspotted. Scudzy is ok if spot free. But today worth $300+. He did better than many other telemarketer victims. In may of 2006 those were pushing $400 I think...maybe more.

Yes, I've run into that too many times to count.....Either bought when prices were off the charts back in the 80's or
off the tube or telemarketer. Same results in most cases. Did buy one of them and the seller was, or at least seemed,
happy to get some of her money back. She got about 40% of what she paid and all the receipts were with each coin.
She got on some NY city telemarketer's list and just kept getting fleeced over and over. Of course her greed entered
into the equation and the telemarketer was playing on that.
Mostly, like you said: you give 'em a price, they say thanks, and you leave never to hear from them again!

<sarcasm>My favorite</sarcasm> is when smoeone walks into a shop with colorized Walkers or ASE's... Typically depressing and none too pretty a reaction.

When I see people with Jewelry come into coin shops and get a quick lesson in what retail appraisals really mean (ie 5X the wholesale value of their items), it sort of makes me sad. Buy them for the memories, but appraisals are pretty much meaningless.
