Do you trust Fed Ex to deliver ?

I just went to get my Jefferson Spouse from the Fed Ex Office. The Fed Ex man made his first attempt at 1 oclock in the afternoon on a workday and guess what? I was F@*#$ng working!!!! So instead of hopeing they would try again and not send it back to the shipper for lack of someone signing for it I made the 9 mile trip to get it. imageimage

P.S. the coin is beautiful image

Why didn't you have it delivered to your work address if you knew you wouldn't be home to sign for it?

Also, you can authorize Fedex to leave packages without a signature (if it's worth the risk), unless the sender specifically won't accept sig exceptions.

One of these companies (maybe UPS) will refuse to leave a package in certain areas if there is a history of them coming up

I really don't like Fed Ex for that reason... the closest Fed Ex location is about 20 minute drive from my work, which is 20 additional minutes from my house. I just called asking if I could meet them near my work because no one will probably be home tomorrow when they deliver. They said no and they will just attempt to deliver. So that means I'll have to go pick it up anyway... what a PITA!!!! That means I won't get it until Tuesday now. I'm not pleased. If they just sent to the USPS, I'd have it that day.
  • On the fed ex delivery notice it said Shipper (U.S. Mint) requires signature for delivery

I have to trust at some juncture, but I try not to fret at any.
  • DHL is my personal preference for delivery. I have never had any problems.

Maybe we can convince the Mint to use DHL?
  • That is just terrible. FEDEX should have left it in your outhouse.

Set up a PO BOX and have it shipped there. It will come Registered from the Mint.
It may take a week or so though.
I have one set coming to my PO BOX.

I have the same problem with Fedex, I am never home. I gladly drive the 20 minutes--they are open until 8:00 pm.
My Fedex girl will deliver it to my work (I work in same town I live).

I've never had a problem with FedEx. Of course, being retired, I'm home a lot of the time now. Besides, our FedEx lady always carries dog biscuits in her truck for our German Shepherds. They love the FedEx lady!

I don't understand....you are complaining that you had to drive 9 miles to pick it up? That's one of the reasons I love FedEx. If I'm not home, I can drive about 10 miles away and still have it that night. A lot of coins will be shipped so that signature is required. If it goes to a PO Box, you have to be there during PO hours which are usually much more restricted than FedEx.

FedEx, UPS, USPS, DHL... They all lose stuff. None of them is perfect in regards to that. I've had stuff lost in all 3 even with registered mail.
  • Well tmot99 I live in northern virginia and 9 miles one way is about half an hour in traffic. Today is a Sat and I would like to spend my measly two days with my children and my wife. My whole complaint is not that I had to drive my complaint is that Fed Ex delivers only during working business hours. Since I am a working person and so is my wife the odds of us being home when they deliver is nill.

A whole 9 mile trip!!! Poor thing!

The nearest FedEx facility is a 45 minute drive north of here!

The Mint DOES use DHL on coins of lesser value. I had to go to the FedEx office this AM myself, since they attempted delivery yesterday and I was at work. 10 miles one way. But still, FedEx is open until 7:00 PM on weekdays, and all day on Saturday, unlike USPS. Likewise, had to go because of signature requirement. Small inconvienence for better safety. I wouldn't like it if they just left it at my door and it disappeared.

  • 9 miles isn't bad... I have to go 45 miles one way to get it.
  • FedEx tried to deliver my coins yesterday but I was not home...SOOOOO I called them right up and had that driver turn around and redeliver my coins....took him about an hour to redeliver from the time I called.

Are you kidding! Have you ever looked at the tracking info on a DHL shipment from the mint? I think they send it through every one of the lower 48 states before they drop it off at a post office, and then you get it a day or two after that. I have had a DHL shipment take over three weeks!

Oh, I forgot. I love fedx it is right on the way home from work, so my wife will call with the tracking number, and I will pick it up on my way home.

Only after 3 attempts is it considered undeliverable. Picking it up or having it HELD at the FedEx station near the house is just as good.
  • one thing for certain about fedex, they are strict. I was once reprimanded for throwing a package of bubblewrap that a someone was shipping. No kidding. For some reason they never caught me throwing the computers and other fragile items around. Crazy huh?

I have had my share of problems with FedEx too, however I had a shipment that went DHL take 6 weeks, believe it or not. I reordered the item (as I realized it would be a good item to have more than one of) and it arrived the next day!

I don't truct FedEx at all. They have made me drive all the way across town to pick-up a package with no signature requirements and they have left packages that say signature required on my door step or on the planter in my front yard!

Join the club dude, they make 3 attempts and if you are not there it goes back. I took a trip across town Friday to get mine. Never lost anything from Fedexp, can't say that for the good old US postal service.

The Mint does use DHL, that why it takes 10 days for me to get a delivery if it's not expedited, I live about 110 miles from Memphis, the last package went from Memphis to Ohio, back to Memphis, then to Kentucky, and from there to local facility to be droped off at the post office. It would have been a lot easier just to send if by regular mail (I wish they had that option for lower price orders).

In the last four years more 30K delivered from Fed EX from the U.S. Mint. No problem whatsover. After the first attempt just call Fedex to hold the package for you to pick up. You can't call and request this until after the first attempt for delivery though.
  • Any delivery service is only as good as your driver. The lady that delivers here is great and I had my coin at 9:05. I'm not crazy about DHL. When things are shipped from Memphis Fulfillment Center, it commonly takes a week to arrive at the USPS sorting center for Cincinnati. I guess they are using bicycles.

  • Yes.

  • I've had trouble with Fedex. I think the driver knew coins were in the box.

Get a PO Box and be done with it.

Very cheap insurance against such fraud, plus the package will come via Registered if of significant value.

You can't authorize Fedex to leave anything from the mint that they have required a signature on (expensive things). I used to come home, load up the kids and head over to fedex--sometimes several times/week.

Then I got a Private Mail Box (Mail boxes etc, Postal Annex, UPS Store, etc.) They accept all forms of mail, sign for it, and have it for me on the way home. All my business goes there now. This is better for me than a PO box in that it is on my way home, accepts all forms of mail, and I don't have to stand in a long line to pick up my packages. Oh yeah, the manager and all the employees now know me by name and we chat daily...much frienlier than a Post Office. --Jerry
  • Just like with any carrier that handles millions of packages a year, there are going to be instances where issues and problems come up. They can't be perfect and convenient for everyone, there are so many variables with each individual recipient - area they live in, their work schedule, the distance to the nearest facility of that carrier, the work ethics of the employee assigned to the recipient's area. Bottom line is, does it bother you that much, that you would change your lifestyle or where you live to alleviate your delivery problems? Probably not - in which case it's not that big a deal, so don't sweat it.

I personally have no problems with any carriers - USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL. The employees they all have assigned to my area are great, and I'm personally acquainted with 3 of the 4. But I guess that's just one more reason I'm glad I moved here, and that I don't live in the collar suburb of a huge metropolitan area like Chicago anymore.
