Is it beneficial for dealers to post an "inventory last updated" date on their website?

I tend to be curious how dealers do business on the internet. Personally, I like website with a lot of content, and ones which change frequently to get me to revisit often.

I noticed that some dealers, but not all, put a date on their website indicating the last time that inventory was updated. I always wonder if this is a good thing from the dealer's perspective. For example, I visit the Doug Winter site about once a day. The time that I spend on the site is totally dependant on two things--- whether there is a new blog, and the inventory update indicator.

Here is the process I go through (Six Sigma vetted and certified image )

(1) Log onto the site. See if there is a new blog on the home page.
(2) If yes to Step 1, then read blog.
(3) If no to Step 1, hit the "inventory" button.
(4) If the "inventory updated" date is anything but today's date, immediately get off the site and move on to other dealers' websites.

So if there is no new blog and the inventory is not updated, I am on the site for a total of about 4 seconds. However, if there was no "inventory update" date, I would slog through page after page of inventory, and maybe something would catch my eye that I missed the previous day.

Anyone have any thoughts, or do I think about this too much?

I don't sell coins through my site, but I always list the date of the last change on the bottom of my homepage. Personally, I like the idea of having the last updated information on a page.

I do have a "Last Update" date on my website. I did this solely to save Longacre some time. imageimage

Some dealers continuously update their inventory list. When they sell a coin, they delete it from their listing. That's the way it should be. Nothing more frustration than to call about a coin and to be told that it's been sold and then to see the same coin again several weeks later on the same dealer's inventory list.

  • Virtually all websites benefit from a last updated time stamp. For dealer websites with inventory that goes triple. An easy way to find new coins helps, especially if the inventory is large and diverse.

Yes.. I always look for that feature, otherwise I assume the information is outdated - and experience has proven that assumption to be accurate. Cheers, RickO
  • This is very helpful when looking for updated inventory. I go on Alpine and if he hasn't updated I am out of there in seconds. With Brian Greer I have to go through everything because he doesn't have a date for his latest update. I did write him and ask him to include one but he said that he updates frequently but if it is an area I'm not looking in, I wouldn't know. I think I have the same issue with Dick Osburn's site. Besides, I find it more exciting to look when I know someone has new inventory.

  • Of course it is beneficial, why would it not be?

Extremely beneficial....I always look for when the new inventory was added. Along those lines, I very much like to get newsletters in my e-mail about a particular coin company's new purchases

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.
  • Moogli..........., concerning Dick Osburns site, you'll see an asterisk by each recently added coin. You can scan his inventory pretty fast because of that.
I like it when the dealers site shows when it was last updated.
