MS70 $50 Buffalo's now selling at spot

I saw several MS70 $50 Gold Buffalo's close on ebay at just a little over spot.
With ebay fees and paypal fees the seller netted less then spot. What gives

  • it's a great looking coin though, and the bullion wrapped in plastic argument could be applied to most
    of the hobby.

True. IMHO, at least half of what is in major plastic has no business being there, modern and classic alike. (Way more than half actually.)

Wow, PCGS and NGC. I'm glad to see they're not adding value. There's hope out there after all.
  • They have sold for near spot because the label doen't have the infamous FIRST STRIKE on it.
  • Well said. No first strike = no premium.

Amazing what a "label" will do. Same grade, but sold for $990.00

I'm not selling them on open bid but I've sold several 07FS's lately for $1099 and the matching 06FS's for not much less. it's all in the pop reports. The pop of the 07FS is low for the popularity of this coin. --jerry

A perfect example of what happens when the Mint decides to hype too many issues. Musical chairs. Some new issues win, some lose. If there's a market for 200,000 oz. of U.S. gold in coins every year, how will the 200,000 oz. be divided up when there are 16 different issues each year? Or 32 new issues per year? Ultimately, who will even care?

    200,000/16 = 12,500

    200,000/32 = 6,250

    200,000/64 = 3,125

You see the progression? What's rare? What's scarce? It's anybody's guess, and it depends on the Mint. They are gonna lose alot of potential customers once the interest drops off. Problem is, when that happens, the true rarities will surface.

If you have enough money to play with, I guess it's an interesting game. If not, it gets real uninteresting in a hurry.

    At least it's still gold.

I'll take a MS61 slabbed $20 Saint that's 80 years old (with a limited mintage and some history) than a piece of bullion.

The fate of most other recent mint bullion products will approach the 0% premium of the MS70 $50 Buffs as gold goes higher. Eventually there will be no premium for lots of bullion gold, possibly for many lower graded saints as well. First Strikes will go into the melting pot next.
