Formerly - Greatest Autographed Card in Exisitence thread. Now - SHOW OFF YOUR AUTOGRAPHED CARDS Thr

What's the greatest autographed baseball card in existence? I would love to see some scans of some of the greatest autographed cards. One of the greatest that I've ever seen is a 1933 Goudey Ruth. I've also seen DeLong Gehrig. I've never seen a 1952 Topps Mantle, though I'm sure one exists, probably.

Let's get ready to drool.

Edited to say - Let's change this up a little. Let's show off our autographed cards. I have some that I wouldn't mind posting. They don't even have to be yours. You can show off some of your own, or you can post some scans of some amazing autographed cards that you've seen.

Now, let's get ready to drool.

I have seen a few 52 Topps Mantles, a guy had one on ebay that was the condition of an attractive 2. It went for less than $5,000 if I remember correctly. I think it was a bargain. I have seen a few Mantles where they erase the facsimile signature and had him sign in the box. I gotta say that the Ruth auto was one of the coolest ever, the card was so nice too. I have seen a Clemente signed rookie, but it was ball point and did not show up that well. What if a signed Wagner T206 surfaced in decent shape?

    That Wagner would be something.

    Here is the Delong Gehrig.

Wow, do you know where there is a scan of it? That's a pretty good mix - not only a rare signature, but a rare signature on a rare card.

  • I have a 1990 UD Mike Deveraux auto. Yes, THE Mike Devereaux.

I'm assuming you'd like to see a signed card of a Hall of Famer but I will offer that there are some rare non-HOF autographed cards that might be considered "The Greatest" autographed card in existence. Here are some which come to mind:

In March of 1993 Steve Olin and Tim Crews were killed in a boating accident. There might have been some cards issued as early as December but I have never seen any 1993 signed cards of either of these guys.

1978 Topps of Lyman Bostock is extremely rare. Bostock was murdered in August of 1978.

One of the most sought after autographed cards, and considered the "Holy Grail" of those who collect autographed sets or team sets is the Duke Maas signed 1961 Topps. Maas died in 1976 so he must have had ample opportunity to sign a lot of those cards but this being the 1961 Yankees team set is highly prized.

As for rarity, I would venture to guess that any vintage signed card of Mike Marshall (ex Dodger reliever) and baskeball great Bill Russell would be high on anyone's list.

For sheer show value though, I have seen - in person - signed T-206s of Walter Johnson and Ty Cobb. It was probably at a big card show and knowing me, I probably thought $200 each was way to much for those.

  • << <i>I'm partial to the 33 Goudey Lajoie >>

That was my first thought as well. There is only one known example, it was owned by Barry Halper (imagine that lol!) Anyway, it was sold in the big auction he had several years back, don't know who won it or what it closed at. As I recall, he (Lajoie) dated it, I believe it was signed in 1936.
  • frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,095 ✭✭✭✭✭
Along the same lines of rare - what about a 1972 Topps signed Clemente? A 1978 Topps signed Munson?

The Clemente and Munson idea had been discussed in a thread before. I think the Munson had appeared a few times.

If I had my choice of anything that is known to exist I"d go with the Lajoie in a heartbeat.

Of the 2 sets I"m aware of that are often collected signed, the '64 Topps Giants Farrell and the Perez Steele Great Moments Ashburn are the key cards and the most sought after.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

I have posted this before but I have a collecting friend who has the ENTIRE 1952 topps set autographed. He grew up in new jersey in the 50s and lived near a clubhouse attendant for the yankees.

Great googly moogly! Sorry, that's just the first expression that came to mind.

Let me read it again and see how I react again.... Holy Schnizel Flitz!

You mean he still has it? Fort Knox might could buy it! Wow!

  • Within the last year, a major auction house (can't remember which) had an auto'd T206 Cobb (green portrait). Tough to beat that one!

Yeah, holy Krypinski is what I thought too. But he's got em and they are locked away in a bank vault. All from his childhood....although some of the autos were finished in the 70s. Just goes to show there are a lot of collections out there that are WAY under the radar. I've only seen a few pics - I'd guess most would grade in psa5 - 6 but all auto'd - unbelievable.

I remember a year or two ago there was someone on ebay who had a 1952 Topps Mantle rookie autographed. What was neat about this was someone used an eraser to get rid of his name in the white box and had Mantle sign it there. Was the coolest autographed card I ever saw. There was a thread with pics here at one time but I couldnt find it. If I remember correctly it sold for around 12K????

But here is my favorite from my personal collection....

I have a friend who was the nephew of Cliff Mapes, Mantles roomie in the 50's. He has a ton of stuff signed by the Yankees but his prize is his 2 Mantle RC's signed. One was waded up and put in someones back pocket, the other is nice around 4-5. He wrote to Negro league players starting in the early 70's and has one of the coolest collections I have ever seen. He also lives with his mother at the age of 45.

  • I have a 1957 Topps Mantle/Berra vintage autographs from the 50s (old style "M" for Mantle). Ballpoint, not sharpie. It may be the only one of this quality (signatures are 8/9) in existence. I paid $2,500.00 three years ago this card is breathtakeing.
  • always love showing this one off (the combo autos are the best, in my opinion)

I have seen a 1933 Goudy Ruth autographed. It was perfect. A beautiful card and signature.

I was set up at a small card show in the 1980's in the Philadelphia, PA. area. A boy and his father approached my table and we started talking about sports and cards. He then pulled out the card and asked what its value may be. He wanted to know because he had a possible deal to trade it for some complete Topps sets, a run from I think 1978 to 1983 plus a 1963 Fleer set and a few minor single cards. My advice to him was to keep the card and under no circumstances trade it for some modern cards. I told him the sets can always be pieced together or bought at a later time but a signed 1933 Goudy is very rare to come by. I sure hope he listened to me.

I had the 1961 HR Leader signed by Mantle, Maris, Lemon and Colavito. It was very sweet with sharpie sigs of Mantle and Maris. Don't have a scan on this PC though. I sold it for $1500 a couple years ago.

I changed the title and edited an addition to the first post to say - Let's change this up a little. Let's show off our autographed cards. I have some that I wouldn't mind posting. They don't even have to be yours. You can show off some of your own, or you can post some scans of some amazing autographed cards that you've seen. I have a couple that I wouldn't mind showing. I just have to get them scanned.

Go ahead and bring out that 1968 Mantle, Mays, and Killebrew. I forgot who has it, but I must say that it is one of the most beautiful autographed cards I've ever seen. By the way, I love the 1963 League Leaders card.

Now, let's get ready to drool.

I started the thread about the 1979 Munson and 1972 Clemente autographs. Shortly thereafter the Munson became available in an auction house and I believe sold for $3500.

This is a scarce auto (not my card) of John Kordic who died in 1992 from a drug o.d.

  • I miss Munson.
  • I went to Cal's 2000th consecutive game that was held at the Metrodome, and he came over to the sidelines before batting practice (hardly anyone there yet, gates had just opened), and signed for about 10 minutes. I only had my ticket stub. His wife, Kelly, flew in to surprise him at the game, and I spotted her in my section and had her sign it to. There are other 2000th tix signed by Cal, but none at the game and by both Cal and Kelly. This is a 1-of-1 !! He signed it holding it on his knee, and the L in Cal got looped over to the R in Ripken. I have a photo somewhere of him signing it as he did it. The photo is kinda blury, as I just shot a photo of it in it's glass frame. I contacted the TRIBUNE after I got home and ordered a 8X10 photo of him tipping his hat to the crowd and framed it with the ticket stub.

    Here is the PSA/DNA one:

And here is the IP one:

    image

As far as really tough autographs in my collection, I'd have to go with the following:

    image

I've only seen one other one.

    image

Not as tough as say a 1955, but still not easy.

    image
This is probably the toughest item in my collection. A bit rough condition-wise, but a very tough item to find. I'm not sure when exactly in 61 these were released, but Mr. Hornsby passed away on January 5th, 1963 after a period of ill health, leaving 2 years at the most for the card to have been signed but realistically it was probably a year or so at the most.

    image
Haven't seen one signed by both, and I haven't seen many Dean signed cards.

    image
    I haven't seen another.

Edit: While I've missed out on my chances to get a 52 Topps Mantle signature (most noticibly the trimmed one that started off with Verkman then made it's way to Mastro), I did manage to get this:

    image

You can find them on eBay without much of a wait.
