Poll: Will Mariano Rivera be a First Ballot Hall of Famer?

I voted Yes. image

"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."

Comments

  • Won't be a first ballot hof'er, but will make the hall.

Relievers, even ones as dominant as he is, will never be given first ballot status. Hell there are deserving closers who still haven't made the hall.

  • I agree with Stitzen, but voters attitudes might change by the time Rivera becomes eligible. Unfortunately it will also depend on who else is on the ballot that year.
  • In the past 10 years, McGwire is the only player better than Rivera to not make it on the first ballot. In the past 20 years the only player better is Jenkins. Both drug users

And Rivera is still pitching at a very high level

(Rivera may or may not be better than Perry)

While Ax is right regarding relievers in general, Rivera will break the trend. Universally acknowledged as the best for many years, big in big games. Rings. He's got it all.

he's a lock, IMO. Best in the game for quite some time.
  • Yes, in the red sox hall of fame. He has about 2X as many blown saves against them than any other team
  • Not last night. image Emphatically I might add.

  • yes. and on the first ballot. He and Trevor Hoffman.
  • The same 'logic' that keeps DH's out of the hall is what haunts relievers, that being of such a specialty player that they are widely overlooked despite their importance and function.

Yes, will be a First Ballot Hall of Famer
    10 (votes) 76.92 (%)
Will make the Hall of Fame but not on the first ballot
    2 (votes) 15.38 (%)
Will not make the Hall of Fame

Well, this is a small sample size but if the voting committee goes the same way Mariano will be a 1st Ballot Hall of Famer when he retires.

  • He'll be a hall of famer, but I doubt on the first ballot. Same with Trevor Hoffman. Rollie Fingers and Bruce Sutter took forever. Gossage and Lee Smith still aren't in. He's probably the best of this generation but he has a few things going for him that some writers--quite possibly more than 25%--will take into consideration and hold against him: He plays for the Yankees and at times has benefitted from that team around him. No closer has gone first ballot. I don't see anyone bucking that trend...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

the fact that Fingers and Sutter made it will help future votes for relievers to go in favor of HOF election. Perhaps Rivera becomes the first reliever to get elected first time out?

Mariano has broke the mold. Sure fire first ballot Hall of Famer. No doubt about it. Of course this debate will rage until is voted in at first chance .... and he WILL be. image

  • I hate the Yankees but I recognize that Mariano deserves to get in on first ballot.
Wise men learn more from fools than fools learn from the wise.

  • He's the best reliever of his era
so he's a lock for the HOF
    but not immediately
    the voters are morons
    he's not a HOF'er on his 1st eligible yr
but 10 yrs later, with no more saves suddenly the voters say
Geez, this guy is HOF material I don't get it

Keep wishin' that, but one need to only look at how specialty players are voted upon by both MLB and NFL HoF voters to see these types of players simply don't get HoF recognition.

There will be plenty of voters who, on his first ballot, will say 'well he pitched so few innings' and use that as a means to keep him out on the first ballot. Mark it down - it's going down that way.
  • He's a HOFer simply based on his regular season numbers. He's a first ballot HOFer because of his post season success. And no, as you probably already know, I am NOT a Yankee fan.

First ballot lock for the HOF. His career numbers are as impressive as any closer's in history, and with his incredible postseason record on top of that, no way he doesn't get in on the first ballot.

  • People are confusing what should happen and what will happen. Voters simply will not give a closer a first ball induction. Sorry. It won't happen.

Say all day how he should, how he's this or that, but the voters simply will not allow it to happen.

    First ballot. Should and will.

  • He is the standard that all other relievers will be judged against in the future. On that basis he will be a first ballot choice for the Hall Of Fame in my opinion.

imageDo we need to even ask this question. He's the most respected reliever of all time. Everyone likes him. He's a lock for the first ballot as is Hoffman. Rivera's post season stats are remarkable.
  • NOBODY does it better, with his stats and longevity it would seem to be a no-brainer.

I voted yes, but I'm not certain the writers will feel the same way - no respect for classy relievers.

    Actually,

I don't know where you heard that from but MO had 28 saves in 2002 despite a very very good year. So, it is his 10th season WITH 30 plus saves ..... not 10 straight! image

And not to come here with MO pom poms on and all .... he really does not need it BUT that 1996 season he had BEFORE he was a closer and ringing up saves was the most surreal and unbelievable season I have ever seen a relief pitcher have. When he was setting up for John Wetteland ..... he was just simply DOMINATING from April through October with NO drop off. Unreal ........

Michael Kay just said it! It must have been a vicious Yankee propaganda campaign that the YES network was behind image
