First Try at Coin Photographs (warning large photos)

I collected coins for many years in my youth and have now started collecting again with my son. We spit all coins and their cost 50/50. The coins I collected in my in my younger days reisde with my father, and we have yet to split the collection shared by my father, my brother, and me.

I visited my parents last month and we let my son choose a duplicate Morgan from our coins. I took these shots of it with a Panasonc Lumix DMC-TZ1. Despite my lack of photographic knowledge or skills, I think the results are ok. I took two sets, one in direct sun, the other in sunlight filtered through white tissue paper. I used macro mode and shot from about six inches away on a tripod. As you can see the coin was in a 2x2. The photos are not retouched at all just cropped. These are full resolution images and fit nicely on my screen which I run at 1280 x 1024 resolution. They are probably a bit large for the forum. What size do you recommend? Maybe half this size? Is it worth pulling a coin from the 2x2 to photo it?

Feel free to comment on the photos and give a grade estimate if you wish. All my coins are raw, my grading skills were never very good, and coins weren't graded like they are now when I collected before.

You may not want to "spit" coins. image

I have no clue about Morgans but my guess would be '64?

Nice images and the first set looks better to me.

  • I'd say your results are "better than okay". Awesome shots!

I'm not a coin genius by a long shot but I know a thing or two about cameras and when you're talking coins on line the only way to articulate your point is with a photo.

    You done good.

Do a favor for those of us who don't have a 60 inch monitor, make them a little smaller.
  • Nice photos. What is the make and model of camera that you are using? Thanks.

The camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1. It's just a point and shoot camera. I purchased it because of its compact size for a camera with 10x zoom. Of course, I'm not using the zoom at all on the coin shots. It is 5 megapixels and I think I paid about $250 for it.

  • Incredible for a first try.......nice coins too.

Taking the coins out of the 2x2 may allow you to capture more of the lustre, notice the top section of the coin looks kinda like its spray painted? I think if they were out of the 2x2 that would look similar to the bottom section of the coins.

Good luck on your second Coin Journey with your son.
