Let me throw this out. I've got one too, and mine has a rotated reverse. It's in a PCGS MS61 RB slab so I always felt it was the real thing. And I've seen other slabbed '55 DDOs with rotated reverses - about 15 degrees or so - same as mine. Mine's in a SDB so not in hand. But others I've seen haven't all had rotated reverses, and this one doesn't seem to be rotated, so apparently some are and some aren't. I always heard there were only 25,000 of these made, and doesn't it seem like such a small number that more than one reverse die would be part of this issue? Anyone have any knowledge of what I'm referring to? Am I clear on this?

Nice coin , I have a NCG, MS-61 and let me tell yours looks much nicer, you're sinking my thinking that earlier slabed coins were graded with more thought put into the grading. That is a nice coin.

Mcgrover, having a rotated reverse doesn't mean it was a different reverse die. It would be the same reverse die but it got loose and rotated. You should still see the die markers on the T of CENT on the reverse. There probably are some more out there like it.
Ok, assuming I've got the die scratches from the 'T', you're saying the reverse die "chattered" its way 15 degrees off center. What's the chance the reverse die was re-installed after stamping off a number of 15 degree offset coins? If it "chattered" over, then there should be rotation varying from 0 degrees to whatever the max degree offset was (say 15 degrees), and if re-installed then the rotation would only be the one variation. Do I have this right?

Very nice coin for an AU-55. Has original lustre still on the coin. Has a good chance for an AU-58 with the clean fields it has. Great full strike also for an AU-55. Definitely a keeper. Mike. Someday REAL American HERO's will be on our COINS.
Enjoying time at home with the family now is my full time passion.

I have two of them and they both have slight rotation.
I've never seen the rotation as an authentication point for this coin, I suppose because they aren't all rotated. My point was that doesn't it seem like such a small mintage for there to be from zero to 15 degree rotation? And in my limited knowledge I assumed the rotation was due to one of the dies being set up off line, rather than being the result of a 'loose' die walking out of line. I suppose it could happen either way? I'm happy to hear from anyone who knows more than I about how rotations can come to exist.
