It looks like it might be RIC 130 or 130a.
(RIC=Roman Imperial Coins, a standard catalog)

That looks like a nice example, VF-25 seems a little harsh to me.

  • There seems to be very little wear with practically 100% of the detail remaining. Even given difficulties of grading based on a pic, VF25 is clearly not a correct grade. This looks more like an EF or near EF coin to me.

A grade is an inadequate report of an inaccurate judgement by a biased and variable judge of the extent to which a coin corresponds to an undefinable level of an unattainable state of preservation. - Never tell me that grading is science.
  • I asked JP Martin about this one and this is what he said:

The coin was probably burried new but corrosion had affected the surface to the point that it had to either be net graded or kicked out.

Regardless, I think it's an aesthetically appealing coin (then again, I know exactly squat about collecting ancients and what is considered "original" or "attractive" by experts).

Cameron, what is ICG's policy on net grading? I have had Roman coins BBed for very, very minor corrosion yet they slabbed this coin. Is it just a judgement call like all grading?

This coin sold on eBay last night for what I think is a very low price. I probably would have been better off cracking it out and selling it raw as AU.

I have two points to add to this:

    1) I wish ICG would list problems for ancients, and have two types/levels of slabs (even an "authentic" slab would be good).
    2) This is exactly why I wish more big ancient dealers would deal in slabbed coins. You would never see "corrosion" listed on the description of that coin. I know I am grateful for a third party opinion of a coin, especially a more valuable ancient.
