Suffice to say, I am fairly heartbroken that the pride of my collection wasn't graded image

I bought those two about 20 years ago, before PSA existed and I wouldn't have thought trimming was as prevalent. I didn't notice anything (particularly the 68) and if it is trimmed, they didn't do a very good job!

Advice? Should I resubmit or try BGS or GAI?

Ill have to look at the griffey again, I figured 9-10, and saw 0 flaws. Maybe I missed something. The Clemens at least will pay for the sub, but I still am image about my ryans.

That would make trimming much more prevalent

Look on the bright side....you got a solid grade on the Clemens and a decent one on the Brett, right? image

I would be upset over not having those two graded though. Are they really off as far as their size goes? If so, then I'd go with one of the other companies, but if not I might try one more submission (if they are at least PSA 8 candidates, that is).

  • At this point I'd take 4+ on the ryans, they aren't worth very much if they won't grade!

I will post them when I get them back, which will probably be later this week knowing USPS.

I will measure them then. I have another Ryan 68 that appears to be OK, what is the tolerance for width and height at psa?

I thought the Mays was a 4-5 too!

    The Brett was a 8-9.

  • Do they simply measure the cards to see if they are 2.5x3.5? Is that the best way to check before I submit or is there just a random chance that they decide it is ungradable?

Some of the dealers back in the gold rush of the 1980s were terrible cheating stealing crooks. Some were good, others were card doctors and since there wasn't really any grading available (maybe accugrade or ASA back then?) they could get away with it if the buyer wasn't sharp.

I'm sure many of the trimmed and recolored cards today were touched up back in the 80s.

Also if you really need the ryans to be slabbed and don't necessarily need them to be PSA for a registry set, and they're your keepers, send them to SGC. SGC has no problem with slabbing nice cards that were trimmed or recolored, they grade them "authentic". Doesn't cost much, they come back fast. I had some vintage football HOFers that were beautiful but trimmed and they look good in that holder.

  • I would love it to be graded so it could be sold, but I am really concerned over how many others I might have that are trimmed...

I know my 61's and 62's are OK since they were my father's collection as a kid, but what is the best way to prevent this from happening again? How is the best way to ID a trimmed card?

    Can they be sold raw?

Look for uneven or wavy edges. the corners might have a "butterfly" on the tip indicating a new cut. If the card is older sometimes the edges on a trimmed card will show visibly a different color or less wear (smoothness) to them. Measure them but Topps had alot of size variations to cuts and card doctors pick out slightly larger cards to trim to perfect size. Uneven, wavy and fresh looking edges is my only clue usually.

Sure you can..... Of course an unethical seller would not mention that it was rejected by PSA as evid of trim. image

  • True, but even if sold raw, they might be ungradeable, so who would want them?

Is my best option to try again with another grading service? I really don't need the cards for a collection and need the cash more than the cards.

  • I would go with jimq112 advice, get SGC to slab the card as Authentic then sell..

There is a market for these cards... People will pay for a nice looking Ryan rookie even if it is trimmed. Now i would not expect to get major $$$$$$ for it though.....

  • Many peopel would want them, just to want them. Problem is they could get into the hands of an unethical dealer. I agree trimming was probaly more prevelant in the 80s than it is now, back then nobody took a loupe to cards and many sure signs are missed without one.

This is a trimmed card that I sent SGC. They said they would evaluate it and if it could be graded it would, if it was trimmed but authentic they would slab it authentic. I paid $70 for this card, I have the same card in a 7 that costs 10 times that. I bought it from a very reputable ebay seller who listed it as trimmed. Most don't. It was csacards3, I've bought from him several times and he is a very honest seller.

I think it looks nice, it cost about $15 or 20 or something including shipping to get it slabbed.

I would do the same thing with the 2 ryan cards. If you're just slabbing them to sell them, send me a couple scans and what you're looking for and I might be interested.

  • Just because it says " Not Holdered, Evidence of Trimming " does not always mean it is, esp if you were expecting a 4 as a grade...
  • No, I realize that it may not be actually trimmed, no way to prove it outright, but obviously the psa graders know more of what to look at than I do.

I was certainly not EXPECTING a 4, but would probably take one at this point, cause that was a big waste of money.

Again, I'll post the scans here when they come back and get yalls' opinions.

Honestly, the thought never really crossed my mind that tampering was a problem considering how long I've had the cards...
