Imbalance Between AL and NL

Looking at the standings this morning - does anyone know why the AL has 14 teams, but the NL has 16 teams?

I would think it would be better to have 15 in each league.

Does this not give an advantage to winning the division to the teams in the AL west, which has only 4 teams, compared say to the NL central, which has 6 teams?

Just wondering.

  • I think because except for a few times a year when there is inter-league play if there was an odd number of teams in each league then there would be one team always which didn't play on a given day.

"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."
  • Perhaps it does, but there was a long stretch when the NL had 12 teams and the AL had 14. . .

  • Yeah but 12 and 14 teams are an even number in each league also.

  • Does it gives an advantage to those teams?

Just another reason why interleague play sucks.
